ESC and servo recommendations please

Recommended Posts

HI chaps (and ladies?)

I have a few restoration projects on the go at the moment and have a few questions i would LOVE some answers too :)

I am restoring an early 80's sand scorcher, a Wild Willy M38 and a bear hawk (basher).

Now my question is about (he checks he is in the electronics forum!) Electronics..:HAHA!

I have never bought a stand alone servo in my life (having only ever had two real RC cars before as a kid they came assembled by my dad and the electronics came in the Acoms box.

I want a recommendation for a good reliable and cheap ESC. These are not going to be raced or run hard, More than likely shelf queens with the occasional run as i get more fun from the build (Odd aint I). and when i say cheap i mean circa €15-€20 would be nice.

I also want a good reliable standard steering suitable servo, I have read LOADS of information and recommendations and they all scream for €50-€80 Savox, Spectrum or similar digital wizz bang servos suitable for 100kph racers. I want cheap reliable (branded) servos but i have no experience. I do know i would prefer metal geared IF possible.

So recommend away please!

Oh and i am in Germany so Available in Europe would be helpful.

Since they are all relatively light vehicles then a basic Acoms As-17 servo would suffice, although thye are plastic geared and not waterproof.

Hobbyking have a Euro warehouse and do a load of different standard sized servos from 3 euros upwards..

these are basic but get the job done.. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__44049__H_King_Ball_Bearing_Analog_Servo_39g_4_5kg_cm_0_13s_EU_warehouse_.html

For a simple ESC, modelsport / mtroniks sport auto, now relabelled Sniper RV-20, will handle Tamiya silver can , torque tuned and sport tuned motors - its a simple auto set-up ESC thats also waterproof..

or the Trident XT-20..

I just bought some Carson servos from Tamico: http://www.tamico.de/Servos

They have options for water proofed / metal geared/ high torque or not. Quite competitive on price and because it's coming from Tamico I'm looking forward to giving them a try!

Here are my experiences with some servos.

Acoms AS-17

Came with my first transmitter. Operates rather quiet, a little on the slow side but precise. Went into the Hornet.

Carson CS-3 & CS-5

Very noisy and imprecise. I do not recommend them.

Carson CS-9MG

Metal gears. Heavy and too slow for my taste. Went straight into the Pajero Wheelie (Lunchbox chassis), since it will spend more time lifting its front wheels anyway.

Futaba S3003

Reliable and quiet. Similar to the Acoms AS-17. Comes also with many Tamiya RTRs rebranded as TSU-03. I use these with my three DT-02 cars, one M-03 and my TT-01.

Savöx SC-0254MG

Metal gears, ballraced. High torque and rather fast and quiet operating. I use this servo for the Mad Bull and will get some more for upcoming Monster Truck builds.

I agree with the info above, in particular ive been disappointed with the Carsons.

Ive tried 4 or 5 cheap servos recently and I now have 2 Savox SG-0351 which are about £12

I'd recommend that if its not over budget, as even though the stats might not be that great I find actual performance to be excellent.

Oh....In between the second and third response i have bought some Carsons. BUT they where dirt cheap. If they prove to be that bad i can swap them out.

Cheers for the info chaps. Great advice as always!

Mtroniks are my favourite ESC (Also make ESC for Ansmann.) start around £18 lots on eBay and you can add hopped up motors to the lower turn versions. I regularly fit the RV12 (12 turn limit with reverse some are forward and brake only) to my projects and a hot 15turn motor. As for servos I stick to Acoms regularly available and £7 each bargain :-)
