A Hybrid Scorcher

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the help posting Nic .

Yes the Air Scope is Plasticard . More accurately Plasticard sections laminated and then carved and sanded to the roof profile . Its strong enough to withstand a roll over .

The rear side window's had being cut out by SRB Bloke prior to me buying the body from him and credit must go to him for the excellent job he did on cutting out the basic shape . All I have done is to add my own tweaks and re panelled over the windows as I like the aggressive look it gives .

I have a set of decals i'll be using and was thinking of yellow as the background colour for the body to highlight the mostly red stickers . I may leave the rear side windows white though for a bit of contrast and to look like race numbers

Nice job Arron - love the grafting of the Lancia light pod - the solvent glue did the trick.

Nice cooling slot at the rear too ;)

I didn't like the 'step' at the rear David so I decided to make a feature of it . Makes a good cooling slot :D

There's still a little work to do before it's ready for paint but its getting there .

Looking great Arron, that 037 light pod looks right at home there, glad you chose to go with it. Can't wait to see the colour go on this now!

Agreed on the 037 light pod - it looks fabulous, as does the rest of the project!

Nice, very nice, light pod works a treat. Its coming together really well.

You'll have to start on an interior soon. :)

and Yes we will all want to see a video of it on the sand once it's finished

:) :)

Can anyone suggest a method to heat the ends of a Scorcher rear cage in order to flatten the round section ? I want to adapt one by flattening the ends where the pipe joins would normally fit so I can drill through to make a custom mount .

I know I could simply file flats on them but it will not leave much material and could reduce the strength - any ideas guys that will not leave the plastic brittle ? I assume its ABS ,

That's good progress! Thanks for sharing the pics, too. Don't forget what I told you about adapting the Clod Buster bumper to the Frog rear, I think it would look really nice and neat. :)

I eyeballed one Greg but didn't like it . I think I prefer the Scorcher one as it will allow me to fit the stinger exhaust and hopefully a Duratrax engine . those will hide the gearbox more I think .

Re the Scorcher rear cage, would it be stronger to make a socket that the cage ends fit into and bolt through? The socket could then be fixed to the chassis.

That's maybe the solution - good idea . I could increase the section by gluing round tube over the ends and bolt through that .

Late to the party again...

There's so much I like about this! The body mods look fantastic, light pod is awesome and the scoop and cooling slot are too cool. Real echoes of Steve's Scorcher but with your own style. The filled rear windows are a nice touch, give it some aggression somehow. More please!! :D

Duratrax engines arrived this morning . Not the most detailed items but cheap as chips and ideal for a runner . Just need to figure out how to mount one and make a fan shroud from Plasticard . That will hide the gear box quite nicely :D The bonus is that I don't actually think I need to use a Scorcher cage . Going to see how the Duratrax one looks firstly - no stinger but I can live with that .

The more I look at the images the more i'am tempted to spray this all white and just let the decals do their thing - maybe less is more in this case ?

Then again yellow could look good ?

Oh heck what to do ?????? Paint is always the hardest part of a build in my mind .

ITS PAINTED . Ford Signal Yellow over my usual Halfords white hard plastic primer . Decals applied and a coat of clear . Its looking good :D :D :D.

I was going to do a two tone white / yellow like the Scorcher boxart but after laying down the yellow it looked so nice and bright that I changed my mind .

No photo's get as its drying in the booth .

Glad you went for yellow. There's a long and proud tradition of Baja Bugs being painted yellow so as to be more easily seen when out in the dunes.
