I am in the process of bringing an original Audi Quattro back to runner status.

As ball bearings have become almost essential for a runner, I have been looking for the types that fit in the gearbox. However, the sizes of these bearings are not specified by the manual, and I have no means of measuring the gearbox bearings accurately enough to be fully confident in the figures I come up with. In addition, several bearings are flanged, somewhat complicating the search.

One such set I have seen consisted of 12 1150-size ball bearings, but nothing else. From what I have seen in both initial cleaning of my example and the manual, this 'Ur-Quattro' features a number of different sizes. I estimate only four of them to be 1150-type.

Has anybody else documented/remembered the appropriate ball bearings to fit in an Audi Quattro/Opel Ascona (and I suppose, Wild Willy/Willy's Wheeler) gearbox? Are flanged ball bearings very important to the kit? I am currently some distance away from my own Quattro, and so would appreciate any clarification and/or assistance.

P.S.: For restoration purposes, does anybody have a tip on how to remove the small spring pins from the wheel hubs? It always bothered me that I could never fully-refurbish the car so long as those pins kept me from disassembling the rear axle completely... Seeing the number of restorations that have occurred on Tamiyaclub, I assume it to be possible, but any solution eludes me thus far.

If you are not confident to order sizes online, might be worth taking the old bearings to your local "ball bearing shop" ( google / yellow pages under ball bearing supplier retail ). They will be able to measure and match the size / type.
