Wood5tock's Super Hornet II build

Recommended Posts

If you have a condensing boiler this could take some time :P

No I have a normal boiler thus the cupboard :P:P:P

I hope to have a condensing boiler in the spring then I can have a purpose built hobby bench and all the associated filth to go with it...

Oh the thought of that just make me go all...

...Nurse it's happened again :blink::blink::blink::ph34r:

This is an excellent build thread, very enjoyable. I've also used G Made shocks on a couple of cars, most recently my Stadium Blitzer, they are excellent. I had to take of the rubber pads on the front shocks, but the rears are fine.

PIC LINK... and oddly enough I did a BUILD of them too hehe.

Really looking forward to the end result. My second major kit ever was a Hornet.

I love them. Very good quality and great design. £18.99 per pair. You might wanna ask before you buy though, I got mine from Fusion Hobbies and Joanne said they were almost out of stock. Granted that was the diaphragm 75mm versions, they may have the Aeration sets in and of course it all depends on the size you need.

So far though they are great. I've not ran mine very hard yet but they have a very smooth action. I already have another set ready for my Holiday Buggy and plan to use them also on the TT-02B I have sitting in a box.

Any further updates on this one?

Yes and no, I am still very much working on it currently producing the artwork for the decals.

The reason why I am not updating at the moment is I want to keep the paint job etc under wraps then show it finished. Then show my process for getting it to the finish stage.

Showing the work leading up to the finish would dilute the final job I feel. Having said that you lot might thinks its pants anyway :lol::lol:

That I very much doubt. You have done an excellent job of it so far. I am sure the artwork and final finishing will be of the same high standard.

Now is it ready? Huh? Huh?

Honestly some people

Well this evening I have broken the back of the decal creation. It's been a bit of a brain teaser because of working out all the plates for the colours and how the interact and line up with each other for the printing...

Wood5tock... When I'm doing decal wraps on a shell, I use a very low tack masking tape and template up the shell using that. I tape up and 'trace' onto the tape using the contours of the shell and then peel off and I cut out the relevant areas and then stick this down onto sheets of paper, un wrapping it as I go to end up with a flat version. I then scan these and then use the scans to put it all back together again into a file. I then create a vector template from this file and use that as my master layer for the actual wrap.

Hope that might help for the next project :)

That's exactly what I have done funnily enough, but thanks for the tip bud. I am currently creating (and almost done) the vector artwork for the different plates for the screen printing on to the vinyl, including an extra plate for the cutter guide ;)

Once I am happy with the artwork my end I shall fire it off to Jeremy at Screen Print Digital to double check it's OK, fingers crossed

Interesting. I recognise the head of the Hornet insect emblem, and parts of letters which appear to spell Super Hornet (II?). Interesting choice of colours. Looking forward to seeing the end result!

Did you do them in illustrator?

Yes all done in Adobe Illustrator for full vectorised goodness :)

I use illustrator a lot as I used to be in the design industry. Have you ever attempted to trace/ recreate some repro decals?

No never tried it, to be honest the amount of time it has taken to get these to the stage they are doesn't really warrant the time to do it. Would far rather spend my time building and restoring :D

If I were to do it I wouldn't rely on tracing but creating the vectors from scratch using the right fonts. Having looked at the repros that are still floating about on eBay etc, the line and shape quality are just not up to scratch imo, especially around the lettering which appears to be just traced rather that the proper font found.

I think I would rather wait for a proper set of decals to come up. On and off it's taken me about three years to find original SH decals but now I have two so they usually pop up sooner or later. I may change my mind if I am doing a restoration for something really rare however. My core interest is the mid to late 80s ranges that melted my heart as a kid and I have noticed most decals for these are still fairly available. ;)

Used my specialist 'Tamiya' body holder commonly known as a but of 3/4 x 1/2

Did the other body whilst I was at it ;)

looking good wood5stock. I like your body holder very good.

I use old spray cans with the body stuck to them using special glazing tape to do mines, liking your idea.

also your storage unit for all your Tamiya gear is making me jealous.
