So I have two blackfoots I am restoring and one of them had this under plate on it (top of picture)

I looked in both the Monster beetle and blackfoot manuals and no where is this underplate listed, pictured or mentioned. The only plate both manuals mention is this one (which I have for the other blackfoot I have)

Found this Blackfoot on eBay which has the same (bigger) plate yet has a gray frame? Both of mine have red frames

I'm guessing it's an earlier version with the gray frame and/or bigger plate?

But the majority of them have the smaller plate with red frames.

Ahhh... I got it.

So the BIG plate goes to a Frog. I also just noticed the pic of the gray framed "blackfoot" is actually a frog chassis.

Maybe someone should tell this guy his "Blackfoot" isn't really a blackfoot :D

Fooled me!

Thanks!

That gray framed "Frog" is actually an odd mix. It appears to have the Blackfoot-type front suspension. They used two plastic bearings on each front wheel because the axles are longer for the monster truck wheels. The red pieces were probably reused after replacing the red chassis with a gray one from a Frog. If only the models could talk!

The Brat I just built has the same skid plate. I thought it would be cool to have a longer one though that goes all the way down the end to stop leaves/water and stuff from just flying straight in to the radio gear..

Yes, the re-re Brats come with it, but the original Brat and Lancia came without, and early batches didn't even have the mounting holes for it in the frame and the bumper mount.

Prototype pics of the (original) Frog also show it without the skid plate and without many of the small details that differ between the Frog- and the Lancia/Brat-chassis, so even for the Frog, the skid plate was obviously a relatively late afterthought, but included with the very first production batches.

I much prefer the larger skid plate on any ORV runner - it gived better protection as well as adding the third mounting point.

Fully agree, the only thing that bothered me about it back in the old days, is that it reduces ground clearance, something the Blackfoot skidplate does to a lesser degree.

True but if it's on a chassis with monster wheels it barely matters ;)

Guess I'll build the models as they are, one with the long plate and one without. I too think the longer plate is a better design, but the ground clearance suggestion makes sense now too.
