For myself, I don't matter whether its boxart or not, as long as it looks good/cool. :)

Although with some of the rare bodies, I think being painted in boxart does help, if/when it comes to selling time. But thats just my thoughts.

I remember having bought a custom airbrushed Evo 6 body from here a few years back along with aload of TA03 hop up parts (okay many years back) and never got round to doing anything with the body, stuck it on ebay and I was amazed at the price it went for £65. :)

Tamiyas box art themes are generaly very well thought out and some are even part of the allure of the model. For this reason many buyers will value box-art examples higher than anything custom.

There are some very custom examples around, and when well executed these can even exceed box art prices.

As you are not selling, or worried about resale values then do what you like - its your model, bought with your money and your preferences are what you value.

Some cars just need to be painted box art but many others look just as fantastic in non box art. A long time ago there was a non box art Tamiya club contest. This was my Piaa porsche GT2 entry

own colour and original decals works for me too. ive just bought a shell for my beetle (see my newbie thread) and was gonna rub it down and go with another colour with original decals but now its arrived i really quite like it so will stick with it(for now lol). today a shell arrived for my clod which does need painting but im unsure which way to go with it as yet. was thinking of the Fall Guy truck but im guessing thats been to death.

i like the 1 stock and 1 custom idea but im not so sure the missus and kids will be thrilled having to give up living space and food!!

It depends how good the box art is/was for me, some are really uninspiring and I'd rather do my own thing, others are iconic and I'd rather have a box art version first, then do a second body in a custom theme. There is a 3rd factor though and that's iconic boxart that's been done to death (white/blue Sand Scorcher I'm looking at you), this is where alternate boxart comes in as am doing 1 of my Scorcher bodies in the red/yellow theme instead of the classis blue/white just to be different.

I do also like improving on boxart also, by that I mean tweaking it here and there, doing it how Tamiya should have done it in the first place.

I like both, the only problem I can see is having to buy enough cars/shells to quench all those imaginative custom jobs :lol::lol:

I myself love the idea of having 'Luncies' in these flavours

1. Boxart re-re runner

2. Boxart vintage shelf queen

3. Rolling Thunder

4. Cannonball Run ambulance

5. A-Team Van

Eeek... :lol::lol::lol:

 I must admit I did think of adding that one too, remembering seeing it in your 'Tamiya Workshop' amongst other goodies B) but figured 5 of one model was too much of a good thing

Having said that there is also the black and blue 'Lunchies' too. OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! :P:P:P

I am a big box art fan. However, sometimes custom paints are also a very good alternative and is worth a consideration

Some examples which I did:

Not boxart but alternative paint scheme:

I am quite tempted to see if the guys who signed my van could make me a set 1/12th scale...

I have never painted up a car/truck in box art in my RC building, and I've built almost 100 cars.

Then again, sometimes I think I will, but then get creative and just do my own thing...

To each their own!
Cheers,

Box art has never appealed to me . I find it more satisfying to be creative and go with my own ideas and a theme . Why take all that time and care building a RC car only to have it look like hundreds of other's ? Having it personalised is a large part of the enjoyment I get from the hobby .

not too many of my cars are box art, but some cars have to be box art, original optima and turbo optima both just look right painted up box art.

Most Tamiya models look just perfect in box art look, some may even look better with custom paint. Depends on the model. However, collectable vintage models mainly better done box art. Imho
