1/12 S15 Project "M06RS" Wide ;-)

Having injured my back at work earlier this month, I'm currently stuck at home in "recovery" for the next three months. I'm pretty much immobile and getting bored, so I've decided to put this together to pass some of the time:

The idea is go all out with the chassis, and make something functional yet still aesthetically pleasing. As stated in the thread title, it's going to be an M06RS, since it will have a 210mm wheelbase, but enough mods to garner the "R" designation. Oh, and I'm going to make it 8mm wider as well :) Haven't any idea how this will effect handling, but my primary aim is to fill the wheel arches better than the stock configuration seems to offer.

A sample of the hop-ups I'll be using:

As you can see, most of it is standard Tamiya stuff, with a few other aftermarket makers thrown in for good measure. Not all of it mind you, but this might give you an idea of how methodically I've been planning this build!

Starting with the differential:

The good old TA03 unit! The new M chassis design allows for use of a more modern style diff, but I like the old TA style unit owing to familiarity and having a heap of spare parts already in my possession.

So I added 53379 lightweight diff balls:

And some automotive grade silicone adhesive/sealant to keep everything snug. (The manual recommends "synthetic rubber cement" but I just took it one step further.)

On to the gear case and motor housing:

Came anodized in the standard TRF blue, but I decided to have them stripped and re-plated in flat black. May seem excessive, but I was already in to get a couple sets of wheels done, so having the electroplaters do a handful of hop-ups came at no additional charge.

So I went black with a few other select items as well:

Another objective I've chosen for this project is to try and use titanium for as much of the hardware as possible, and aluminum everywhere else.

Starting with this set:

Which probably won't be enough (considering the amount of hop-ups I'm adding), so I'll probably be supplementing with other titanium and aluminum bits as needed.

Now for the rear end suspension. The entire rear frame is a single molded piece of plastic that neatly combines the arm stays, transmission stay, and rear of the chassis tub. It's impressive, even if a bit boring in terms of design.

So onto the arms, using the titanium coated shafts of course:

Apparently the 54296 shafts are required if you want to use the TRF dampers, but more on that later; I have another problem to solve here first...

I've never built an M05/6 before, they seem to share a lot of parts with the 03/04 though?

Couldn't tell you -- I just use parts like they're Lego brick, so I try to keep a variety of parts and hardware on hand for whatever projects I'm working on. A lot of these hop-ups you see here are interchangeable with the M05, but the M04/M03 generation chassis just shares the diff, dampers, and axles.

I've got a similar hoard of parts waiting for my M-05 build - even at Banzai hop-up prices i reckon i have ca £120 of hop-ups, which includes the TRF dampers. Buy similar in the UK and you'd be looking at £200+ of hop-ups (TRF dampers alone are £60+ in UK). That £130 kit suddenly owes you £350 at UK prices after paint and a steering servo, and its still running around on a silver can :(

Great build OCD - some very nice items and the black anodizing is a great idea to reduce the blue bling ;)

Next up, front carriers and uprights:

But the biggest difference I've discovered is the use of 1050 axle bearings instead of 1150s that I'm accustomed to. Same story with the rear hubs, which is why I skipped the rear end assembly in the above post^^. I'm all out of 1050 bearings here at home, and gonna have to hit the hobby shop tomorrow afternoon to buy what I need. <_<

Making my M06 build at the moment look a little normal lol... Saying that I have fitted a 4000KV brushless so It should be nippy.

Thanks - I'm sure I have enough in this to buy a least two M06R kits, but what would be the fun in that?

A fair amount of the M05/6 specific parts came from Stella, and I feel like I got a pretty fair deal, so I don't feel the burn too badly on this one... not yet anyhow ;)

Wow, this is great! Insane amount of hop ups, which will make it quite unique!

I didn't realize there was an M size silvia body… will have to look into that.

Without the necessary bearings in my grasp, I decided to skip to the next steps.

Building the steering arrangement. The instructions call for 5x9mm ball connectors with plastic spacers, but I think we can do better:

The upper mounting points in the carriers were crazy tight and wouldn't take a screw, so I quickly chased them with a 3mm tap:

The instructions specify that the front ball cups be trimmed to make them fit correctly. I'm lazy and opted to use my diagonal cutters to do the job:

OKAY! Back from the shop with some 1050 bearings... They actually had three sets of these on hand, so lucky day for me :)

Front +4mm axles from Tobee Craft:

The front steering rods are 3x12mm with small ball cups, so unfortunately I couldn't find a suitable hop-up to replace these ugly things.
