Am I completely wrong in thinking the tamiya ESC is for 27t motors? I want a sport tuned motor for the mini, but just before I went to buy it it stated it was a 23t motor? I thought they were 27, shows what I know

As far as I remember the Sport Tuned black can motor is a 27 turn motor with fixed advanced timing compared to the silver can giving it slightly better performance. Even if it is a 23T I cant see it pulling much power through the esc TBH. But I could be completely wrong :)

I have a GT tuned motor (25T) in my Hornet that I have been running for some time without a problem on a stock tamiya ESC.

I also have a superstock RZ that I ran for the first time in my Blitzer last week on stock ESC and did not have any issues with cutting out, I guess time will tell on that one though :)

As I learned recently, vintage Sport Tuned motors were 23T with 0 timing, modern Sport Tuned are 27T with advanced timing. Sellers (incorrectly) market the modern motors as 23T which is a bit naughty.

What makes a difference is the load (amps) that the motor pulls.

I run a 19 turn single in my re-re brat with a Tamiya 101 ESC and it never thermals.

Same motor and ESC in a TT-01 and it will thermal.

Several variables effect the load on the motor.

- motor turns

- motor timing

- vehicle gearing

- vehicle weight

- drivetrain efficiency

- tire diameter (also part of gearing)

- driving conditions

- battery capabilities

Shorter gearing can easily reduce the load, but running through thick grass or mud can quickly ramp that way up again.

Even the battery can effect the load on the motor if you're switching to a battery with higher peak and average output. While motor defines the load requirement, some batteries can only supply so much. This is why packs with a higher milliamp and discharge rate ("c" rating) are quicker.

i run SportTuneds on TEU101BKs, they don't complain.

They're good for 60A and haven't ever felt them get hot.

Just for bashing runabouts though... racers with SportTuned get proper ESCs.

Definitely more 'punch' out of track corners with a fancier ESC.

My ESC is inside the chassis on the m03, I may take it out to help keep it cool. Or even buy an mtroniks to reace it with...

On an M03 it will be fine, it has small wheels and no 4WD gubbins to load up the geartrain. It's when people stick Sport Tuned motors into 4wd buggies that the problems with overheating can arise. Or a TL01 with the speed-tuned gears and the biggest pinion that will fit - as I found out!
