Ah the adjustable motor plates that Willy Chang was talking about :D

boomrunner_43.jpg

He's right this is genius ;) Although the screw head is rounded to b*****y :o

boomrunner_44.jpg

Pinion shows no wear but also no, or very little, signs of lube

boomrunner_45.jpg

r-ohoh!..shouldn't be a 2nd screw on motor, should be a round shaft with double threaded ends;

big plastic washer keeps plates in-situ then a 3mm flanged nut bites into washer.

Shaft wasn't easy to find pre-rere; using a threaded screw/rod isn't a tight fit against the plates.

i'd change the other screw into a hi-tensile caphead too

and that pinion is toast, toss it

good new pinion will have flat plateaus on the teeth tips, yours is all 90% sharp already

Curses a crack! Oh well only one found so far

boomrunner_37.jpg

put the screwpin back in but don't tighten totally, drip superglue into the crack

that should hold fine until you have a huge smack (which will break a new arm also anyways)

Well it's definitely a vintage 'Boomer' there be a 'C-Clip' which 10 secs later was fired across the table to be lost forever :(

"Wrong " , That was only the Bigwig that had that .

The boomerang had the two screws with one that had the plastic washer .

BUT , nothing to say thats not a good idea & this is why it came on the bigwig !.

But the boomerang did have the two screws :D ..

Oh !! ok that is some thing i DIDN'T no about the super sabre .

ya Sabre has it. Built 1 new in 1987 & recently rebuilt 1 wreck... guess that confirms its a real Sabre too :)

haha we've got 1 used old Boomerang too, it got cleaned & tidied up yrs ago on arrival.

Always thought OO had lost the special motor rod and replaced with screw,

never thought about x-checking the manual until you mentioned it today.

Well is seems that luck is on my side regarding the 'flying C-Clip' Once I had cleared the bags of components away for the last photo there it was! Right in the middle of my mat! How it got there I shall never know but I'm glad it did :D

Thanks for all the info guys especially Willy. It's those little nuggets of experience that makes the difference ;) will be updating tomorrow with the second Boomer :)

Right as promised time to do exactly the same the my other Boomer. I will let the pictures do most of the talking as it's the same exercise so no need to have a Deja Vu induced coma ;)

boomrunner_61.jpg

Ironically even though the exterior parts are a little rougher than the white one the internals and tub are lovely

boomrunner_67.jpg

Undersides of the front arms have seen better days

boomrunner_68.jpg

boomrunner_69.jpg

Some odd screws here and there

boomrunner_70.jpg

These parts are in better condition than the first one

boomrunner_71.jpg

boomrunner_72.jpg

Whoo hoo a genuin steering pin... Sweet!

boomrunner_73.jpg

First crack so far

boomrunner_74.jpg

boomrunner_75.jpg

boomrunner_76.jpg

A lot better than the other ones but still a little worn, at least there was plenty of grease around and not dirty grease holding dirt and harmful grit either

boomrunner_77.jpg

boomrunner_78.jpg

Some heavy wear here

boomrunner_79.jpg

boomrunner_80.jpg

Plastic bushing all round

boomrunner_81.jpg

boomrunner_82.jpg

No saving these then

boomrunner_83.jpg

And these have taken a bit of punishment

boomrunner_84.jpg

And as for these...

Somebody decided to shoe horn an 'E-Clip' in a vintage box, no adverse wear or strain by the looks of it, but will check better once I have started to inspect the parts in more detail

boomrunner_98.jpg

boomrunner_99.jpg

boomrunner_100.jpg

Clean grease but the wrong type, looks/smells like mineral auto grease

boomrunner_101.jpg

boomrunner_102.jpg

boomrunner_104.jpg

boomrunner_105.jpg

boomrunner_106.jpg

Mmm... Nice! this stuff stinks like automotive gear oil

boomrunner_107.jpg

Only one 'O-Ring' used in these dampers

boomrunner_108.jpg

More lovely smelling oil...

boomrunner_109.jpg

Well that's the second Boomer 'bagged and tagged' ready for inspection

HI!... If you want to keep the front/rear upper/lower control arms from splitting where the pin goes in, heat the pin up where the threads are with a lighter before screwing it in to new arms. This lets the screw melt into the plastic instead of forcing it's way in and spitting it. I've been doing this for years and have not had one split on me since.

That's NOT a vintage gear box with the E-clip . Look at them both & you will see they are different .

This one has a mix of new & old .

HI!... You can use the "E" clip on the vintage gearboxes. I do it all the time. I hate those "C" clips. lol.

Well NO you can't ! . As it binds up the gear box , as the RE re gear box's have been changed to suit .

Why do i have too say this over & over again ?. :P .

Look at the pic's of the inside of the front gear box & you will see the E-clip flush with the gear box &

the C-clip is flush with the gear box on the other half .

HI!... Never had binding in mine. You just have to run super thin "E" clips that I get from a local fastener supplier. Never had a issue on any of the Bigwigs I have built.

NOW ! that you have made it clear of what you had done , that makes sense & hope it won't

confuse anyone . :D with the E-clip issue ... Only because of clearance etc of gears etc .

Not a bad idea you have .

But then again ! can we class it as vintage :P .....

Posted

I knew about the 'C-Clips' used on vintage models and the 'E-Clips' used on modern and Re-res and not to mix the two due to the binding issues and the fact the gearbox casings are designed for each accordingly.

My question is this how can I tell the difference between vintage gear cases and Re-re?

The only reason I question the point you made regarding the two halves of the cases being a mis-match of old and new is that when I had a look at the side that had the 'E-Clip' on there was no tolerance left and no end float whatsoever. It just felt that the 'E-Clip' was creating a bit of stress. i also noticed witness marks on the gears though the gears where never hard to turn when the case was fully assembled.

Well if you look it also does NOT have a ball bearing & it should have on the re re . This is why

if feels tight , as the re re didn't have plastic bearing , with steal washer .

If you also look at the front where the bumper block goes , you will see that the re re is

filled in & the vintage is NOT . + like i said the E-clip pic you can see it is recessed in & level

with the gear box . so the bearing sits lower .

Right here we go with an update, I was very diligent and inspected every part for both Boomerangs and made a list of all the parts that need replacing. I then wrote all of these out including pat numbers, suppliers and prices etc. Feeling very proud of myself I went off to bed and left my notebook with said master list on the side by my chair and went off to bed. The next morning after a little lay in I decided to get my notebook and start the ordering...

Too late one of my Jack Russells decide he would also add his own stamp on things by not only half eating the list but all my other notes to do with my projects...

After re doing the lists etc I realised he had done me a favour as I had gone a little overboard with the new parts, in fact it came to a similar amount as a NIB Re-Re Boomerang and a nice few accessories (if they were still made)

I decided to go back through all the parts and re-decide what the project really needs in the way of new parts. With the new list complete it was time to clean all the parts...

Just for Sidewaysdave69 NEW Marigolds, well the mint green once were clashing with my all blue set-up :P

boomrunner_112.jpg

I decided to use my stronger APCs from my car detailing box as I have had good results with this stuff, it also smells of oranges and lemons ;)

boomrunner_113.jpg

I left the first lot of parts bathing for a little while before a good scrubbing

boomrunner_114.jpg

Agitating periodically and re squirting

boomrunner_115.jpg

boomrunner_116.jpg

First set of parts done, rinsed dried and back in there bags, on to the next batch

boomrunner_117.jpg

boomrunner_118.jpg

All the parts saved have now been cleaned and back in there bags ready for the re-build. I have also placed more sensible orders for new parts today as well.

I have decided to create the self queen first so i think I shall create two new threads as the two car will now branch off and it will be a lot less confusing, at least for me anyway :lol::lol:

This is giving me ideas for my baja champ! Are you going to be reusing the msc or will you be swapping to an esc? I'm in two minds with mine, keep or swap?

I'm going to keep the MSC for the shelfer but use a ESC in the runner. Luckily both MSCs are in great nick so I can rake my pick :)
