need a bit of help as ive fried 2 x modelsport rv12 assault esc today! i got a flysky gt3c tx and some hobbyking rx's which work with it and today i went to put them on some of my cars. i fitted the one that came with the tx to my carnage with no problems so then i went to fit one of the hobbyking ones (which are identical to the flysky one) to my hyper 10 and had no trouble binding to the tx but i found i had no reverse. the esc leds were showing reverse so i put it down to a faulty esc so i fitted another one connected it all up and went about setting it up. everything was fine until i turned it off and the motor kicked up and ran flat out until i turned the esc back on. i checked the operation of everything again and all was fine so i turned the esc off again and it ran the motor flat out again and went up in smoke. now the last time i ran the car everything was fine so i thought maybe the rx had a fault so i fitted it to the carnage i had done earlier to test and everything was fine.so i put the rx back on the car i was doing and tried another rv 12 esc which also ran fine last time out. this time i connected the rx up to it and the steering servo but no motor and then connected a battery and that immediately went up in smoke. so now i have 2 completely fried esc's which have only been run once but did run fine and 1 which has no reverse which also had run fine last time out and the only new part i have fitted is the rx which gave no trouble when fitted to another car with the same esc? also i have tried some old esc's i have and had no problems. the only common thing other than the new rx is the servo on the car but it seems to work fine and i have had no trouble with an old esc. could the servo fry the esc's? all this was done with a lipo battery but the esc's have all been set up and run on lipos. ive also fiited one of the hobbyking rx's to my monster beetle which has an ansmann sirius esc which is basically the same as mtroniks/modelsport esc(but without lipo support) and had no problems at all.

what gives? is it the servo frying the esc's? is there something the esc's dont like about the new rx's?(although i have 2 fitted and working on identical esc's) is it just bad luck and the esc's have just been bad ones?

im now down 3 vehicles with the esc problems. i have had the same esc fitted to my carnages for a while and have run them hard in any weather and had no problems. grrr spending too much money on these cars and ive taken 10 steps backwards today for no apparent reason!!

I've been seeing some odd things like this lately too. Identical setups and one wants to do a runaway when shut off and the other is fine. Just today I smoked a ESC in a exceed just by plugging it in. Then everything was fine on another brand of ESC that was a runaway in a different vehicle. I'm thinking it must be a leaking voltage to drive the ESC but the only common factor is that it's all the new stuff that's doing it. I don't get it.

After smoking that one today I thought about something I saw on Ebay a while ago that I should have bought. It was made for a 1:1 car but the idea is the same.

Is it possible it could be a faulty motor? A short in the motor might blow an ESC. Can you check out the motor with an old MSC to see if it runs ok in both directions? Is the RV12 ESC substantial enough for the motor you are running, if the motor is high geared or in a heavy model, it's going to draw more current. I've had loads of Mtronics ESCs and never blown one, even running them on 9.6V NiMh, but I have always used them with old 27MHz vintage radio gear. I think it unlikely that a faulty servo would blow an ESC, more likely to damage the Rx.

Hope you find out what's happening.

I love that jar of smoke

Have had various old Austin 1:1 cars and landrovers, LUCAS electrical parts in all.

I have never had an esc go faulty the way described above.

But then I don't use Hobbyking rx's.

Have you tried using original RX for your transmitter,

The modelsport esc seem good quality,

Hobbyking stuff is cheap, I would suspect the cheap component

I agree with Madinventor in that the motor may well be the cause. I blew an RV11 putting 2 RZ motors through it in a Twin Detonator (excess load).

Were you using the same battery throughout also as that could also be a consideration?

Definitely sounds like a high current short somewhere in the main 7.2v circuit.

the motor is a technigold and it runs fine with the cheapo generic chinese esc's that came fitted to both my carnages and it wasnt even connected on the 2nd esc that did a Dot Cotton impression!. the rx which was attached when both esc went poof! has been fitted to a carnage with an identical esc with no problems and is back on the hyper ten with a cheapo chinese esc with no problems? the only common denominators are the battery and the servo. the battery has been fitted to all the rv12 esc's (5) and subsequently an mtroniks storm tio 14 with no problems(essentialy the same). the servo is the only thing left but i cant see why it would blow the esc without damaging the rx which still works with other rv 12's and the cheap esc's.

edit*

i have noticed in the instructions for the esc that it states that should have capacitors fitted to both poles and the technigold doesnt appear to but they have run together before. the technigold flies on lipo!

gonna buy some cheap esc's from hobbyking that work with lipos and give them a whirl with the suspect servo and see what happens. if everything goes ok i might swap an rv12 out of another car and see it fry's again.

got the hobbyking esc's today so ive soldered some hxt bullets on them and tried them on the hyper and guess what? they work fine. same motor, same reciever, same battery and same servo. the technigold motor now plays a tune when i power it up which its never done. is that right? i can only put the problem down to faulty rv 12 assault's which is weird as i had 2 go up in smoke and one with no reverse. the other 2 ive got work fine with the same electrics electrics and so do the ansmann sirius and mtroniks tio storm which are as near as **** it the same esc.

best part of £80 worth of esc's gone up in smoke after 1 run each and for no apparent reason.

oh well!

will see how these cheapo hobbyking esc's last.

Bear in mind the lipo cut off on some of the HK ESCs is 2.8V/cell - suggest run run an external alarm at 3.1V for a bit of wallet protection ;)

cheers percymon. ive just checked and your right. better spend some more money then :(

How long have you had the RV12s? If less than a year and you bought them together they may be from a faulty batch. If be getting on to where you bought them from and ask for them to be replaced under warranty?

Modelsport and Mtronics who make them are really good with replacements.

I would give Mtronics a ring first and speak to them and see what they can do.
