Duratrax VW Baja Bug engine set

I've been chatting with Bromvw recently as were both building Baja Bug/Sand Scorchers on different chassis. Originally we were talking about scratch building the classic VW air cooled engine out of plasticard or styrene when Bromvw mentioned these Duratrax sets. Having checked them out we both ordered a couple each from Omnimodels in the US and they turned up today.

The parts are well made from comparable materials to Tamiya and feel nice and robust.

No instructions but googling reference photos it's easy to assemble. The only change I made was to swap the cross head machine screws in the belt cover for some hex head bolts to improve the look.

Once bolted together it's very robust and the bumper bars have a little flexibility so should work well.

I've mounted the first one directly onto the TL01 rear bumper.

It's attached by using longer Tamiya screws through the bumper and into the Duratrax screw holes.

It already fills the gap nicely

And with the fully weighted car it looks about right to me.

So this Duratrax engine fits a TL01 well. I just plan to build an air cooling shroud to sit behind the engine block and drill out the exhaust pipes.

Oh I did also try test fitting to a DT02 chassis but it hangs out the back a long way, too much for my liking. It did look good on my Grasshopper though

Being working this evening mate - not be home till after midnight . I have a few thoughts as to how i'll fit one on the Frog though . Realistically it will be the weekend before I can do any RC work .

That looks great on the TL-01 . Almost as though its made for the job and could pass as a Tamiya part . It also looks good on the Grasshopper .

I wonder how many other's it will fit ? So long as they could have had a VW engine its a great and cheap fix .

Looks like you might be able to slip a small motor in there and have a working fan belt.

Fills up the space nicely, I will keep a look out for these.

It looks great! If VW engines ever had a gunmetal finish, I bet this scale engine would be stunning painted as such!

I think the plastic will take paint Grastens - going to experiment the weekend .
