Just about to get a couple of new servo's, nothing expensive.

It's only for standard running In a new TT02 chassis, not national finals or anything.

These Tower Pro MG995 metal gear high speed servos keeping popping up. Has anyone users them.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

MG995s used to be good value 10+ yrs ago off fleaBay, but these days IMHO there's

so many clones & fakes around I have no confidence who's the real deal anymore.

Crunchy gears, rough running, cracked cases, leaking oil...

& not ecomomically-worth sending back for warranty. :(

I'd rather just go direct to HobbyKing, I find their house brand much more honest.

Hobbyking servo's are cheap and chearful, its hard to tell if the towerpro's your buying are original or knock-offs these day.

I use these for basic tamiya stuff http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16269__HK15138_Standard_Analog_Servo_38g_4_3kg_0_17s.html

and if you need a more robust servo with metal gear for scalers or heavier kits then i use these http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__23487__HK15328A_Analog_BB_MG_Servo_58g_12_8kg_0_20s.html

yeah I buy the HK 138 for use like a S3001/S3003... std 4kg torque, average 0.20s speed, plastic gears.

Is ok for touring car steering; I haven't busted any HK gears yet - used to break Futaba gears regularly

so I keep plenty of spare gear sets for S3003.

HK 328 is 12kg metal geared, probably overkill for 1/10.

I'd stick that in 1/8th like a genuine MG995 or the Hitec MGs we used to like.

I use HK 298 for 1/10 offroad & SCTs, its got metal gears & 9kg, feels faster than std too.

Lately HK has some (supposedly) Waterproof versions too for a few bux more.

Bought some, they've got rubber o-rings at their casing joints but dunno how sealed they are,

haven't gotten mine wet yet. Don't think I'd trust them on a submarine though.

HK also sells Bluebird for a few bux more again. Many ppl like them but when I tried

early on when their hitorque metal geared first came out... yeah they had torque

& metal gears all right - my BB servos ripped off all their ears

and the gears busted trhough the case!! :)

btw you'd better be PATIENT when using HobbyKing :(

They take a few days to pack & at least 2-3wks to travel.

Longer still if you've got lipos in the order so best to separate.

I keep a box of HK stuff ordered in advance, can't wait a month to start jobs.

just reminded me to check... yep still got a box in the mail, ordered 23rd March.

(hmm HK seems to have updated their order history to omit all dates... sneaky sods!)

Bunch of 138s & 269s and some slooooow cousins for a future project :)

Hope they turnup this week fingers crossed.

For comparison sake, here is the specs of the Protek 100ss Digital in my DB01:

  • Ideal for any 1/10 to 1/8 scale vehicle application
  • Aluminum middle case
  • 0.09 transit speed, and 168 oz-in of torque (12.1 kg-cm) @ 6.0V
  • Full metal gears and dual ball bearings
  • 200mm long 22awg connector wire w/gold plated connectors
  • Cored Motor

Twice the speed, 3 times the torque.
