Is my motor knackered?

Recommended Posts

A few years ago I picked up a cheap mad bull. It has a msuk sniper rv12 esc and a lrp v10 spec 4 14x2 motor, along with a lipo battery.

I never got it working so just put it in the shed. Trying to get life into it now, and the car runs fine with a tamiya sport tuned motor, msuk sniper rv20 esc and a 3300 nimh battery pack.

So it looks like this v10 motor is kaput? There's no life in at all. Is there anyway of confirming?

I've just checked the rv12 esc in my other car and it works fine, so everything is pointing to the motor...

You could connect the wires to the poles of a battery (like a penlite) and see if it turns at all...

Thanks for the tip! Just did that and it spins up a treat! So I assume the motor is fine, and it has to be an esc issue, even though it's working fine with a lesser motor?

The only other variable would be the lipo battery...

Other than that, I can't really make sense of it. Both ESC and motor seem to be fine.

I'm not using the lipo as I haven't a charger for it, using a nimh pack. I guess I may have to take it into my local shop.

And after more time fiddling thinking Whats that all about then? is wrong with this, it works! Must have been a dodgy electrical connection I guess.

If the car has been in the shed for a while, in dusty and possibly damp conditions, chances are one or both of the brushes got stuck in their guides, and may not have been making proper contact with the comm. Moving and handling the motor probably tapped them free again. Motor should be fine - LRP stuff is usually built to last, but it would probably be worth giving the brushes and guides a clean anyway to be sure.

Good thinking there. That must have been it initially.

I do like these LRP motors a lot myself (and the brand in general)...

Any brushed motor weither stock or modified should have a really good clean before being used, especially if its been stored.

You don't need to buy specialist RC motor cleaners as carburettor cleaner is actually nearly the same stuff.

A few drops of bearing oil on the ball races (modified motors) or brass bush oil (silver can type motors) on the brass bushes and your done.

Why risk damaging your esc for the sake of ten or fifteen minutes of cleaning.
