Re-releases

What are the chances of Tamiya re-releasing the 959/Celica?

With prices sky high I'm wonding how safe an "investment" might be?

Not sure, and to be honest the only people who know will be in the Tamiya head office....

However, treating RCs as investments is probably not the way to go, just get the ones that are valuable to you (the ones you like)- and therefore any price fluctuation won't matter as you'll want to keep all your cars!

I'm not looking to turn a profit, just cautious on buying one only to find I could have got a re-resease by waiting a few weeks/months.

$960 buys a NIB on ebay today....Don't think I can justify it at the moment.

I had to mull this one over before buying my NIB 959.

I took the call that it was unlikely to be rereleased because:

1) its 1/12 and therefore useless for any formal form of racing etc

2) because the body is so small, no current chassis confiugurations or parts would work if they wanted to put the body on a current 4wd chassis, unlike the Lancia 037 which obviously worked very well on a TA03RS (it might just squeeze onto an m chassis but they are 2wd so not very realistic)

3) the body was so expensive and hard for them to produce that they would be unlikely to build a 1/10 scale mold from scratch to fit on a current chassis

4) while the 959 may still have enogh of a following worldwide to attract buyers, the celica probably would not

which basically only leaves them with the option of rereleasing almost exactly the same kit - same body, same chassis etc...

and apart fromt the dynastorm (i think) they just dont do that. WW2, Lancia 037, Hummer etc are all on new chassis.

If you dont want to spend the $900 9and to be honest that is a pretty good price - i have seen them go for $1200+ !!!), you can get good condition / maybe even new-built runner with a good body for $300-500 (mainly dependent upon body condition).

All good points.

I am seriously considering the NIB though. I've delt with the seller before so believe his description.

I do wonder how many NIB can be left.....

Can anyone advise the significance of the "Rothmans" vs. "Racing" decals for the 959?

Thanks

Rothmans is a cigarette manufacturer. In the US it is illegal to advertise cigarettes so what you get is the racing decal. You will notice other models especially ones with marlboro livery only come with lines to signify the marlboro logo. 959 rothman decals can still be found but you will pay a premium for them. the rothman decals for the 956 are almost non existent.

For the 956, many kits include the racing sheet but a second, small square sheet with only the lettering Rothmans was also included. Probably only a few countries where it was acceptable received the second decal sheet

Is it [?], before these last months were the 959 craze started, I remember the NIBs going for $500-$700, dont forget that the $1000 region was exlusive then only for 3 speeds, SRBs and some of the first onroaders...

Yes Theo... I also noticed a great raise in the prices 959's tend to fetch lately... And NIB SS's Bruisers and Hi-luxes are in the $1500 or so, heading for $2000... [V]

INVESTMENT IN TAMIYA RC'S ARE NEVER SAFE, therefore I strongly disrecommend it myself... Though it seems very temping - but so is playing slots in the casino... [;)]

Yes, also a NIB Bruiser went once $3500 but that doesnt make even $2000 a cheap price, normal is around $1500...

Well, Jason still has the 959 for sale at $920.

Although I was considering it, my head ruled my heart. It's too much IMO.

I think $500 is more realistic. I understand there can't be too many of these left, but equally, there can't be too many people prepared to spend that sort of money!

I'll wait for a drop before I dip my toe in.
