I always prefered RCDriver over RCCA

For UK-written mags, RRCi is a bit more 'bashing' orientated now, and covers other RC stuff like scalers, quadcopters, motrbikes etc.

Haven't read Racer for a while, but last time I thumbed through they had a vintage resto series running

Your best bet is get 'em all and see what appeals to you after a couple of issues - availability of either UK mag isn't great down here (Oxford) - larger WHSmiths and Martins carry both but the supermarkets don't stock either.

For the US mags, I've only ever seen 'em in larger WHSmiths and one newsagent in Liskeard, Cornwall!

You can get both the UK mags through mail-order though, might be worth picking up some back-issues and see what grabs ya?

This isn't supposed to be an ignorant question - even if it sounds like one - but what's the point of print magazines any more? What's in these mags that isn't on this and similar sites?

I stopped reading mags related to all of my interests some time ago and I don't feel like I'm missing out

Agree! Furthermore, the print magazines are so dependent on advertising that you will be hard pressed to find an objective and honest product test.

RCCA has imho always been one of the worst in this respect. Mostly useless tests where even the crappiest product is praised and hyped. I much prefer independent websites, especially the unsponsored ones. They may not always present the truth, but at least don't have to lie to satisfy the advertisers at the cost of the paying readers.

I'm not even nostalgic about RCCA. The magazine was originally run by RC airplane enthusiasts that didn't have a single clue about RC cars, so the first issues were terrible. Then commercial interests started to dominate RCCA completely, turning a bad magazine even worse. The Readers' Rides was to me the single enjoyable part of that magazine.

Because I like to sit down, enjoy a tea and crack open a magazine - that's why :o .

I recall back in the late '80's, early '90's when everything RCCA was Tamiya.

Would people be so hateful towards print if that was the case now :P ?

Each person has reasons to go digital or print ! Some, are certainly more old school - - - -

Not bought a mag for years, and not seriously (as in every month) since I worked in a papershop,as a paperboy!!

Nothing like flicking through a mag, with a brew. Also nothing better than finding a 20yr old mag and looking at adverts, the new tech out then and the prices!!

The world is changing,I don't use my desktop comp at all,my laptop less and less and everything now is on my phone!

I have a mate who is the editor for a full scale car mag, they no longer have cars for sale in the back,by the time the mag hits the self, the cars have generally been sold online.Would be a shame to loose mags though, but it's already started (High performance Pontiac to go soon),you cannot cut out and stick pics on your wall (not that the wife would approve now anyway).

I agree. This is the case with German R/C car magazines, too.

I'd love to see a printed magazine with honest reviews. One of the few remaining reviewers I still have trust in is Jang from Ultimate RC and Ultimate Tamiya. He is not afraid of clearly stating what he likes and dislikes on his cars, and even doesn't hesitate to put them through a number of ruthless durability tests (those montages are hilarious!). Jang is both an experienced racer as well a passionate modeller who likes to combine both scale realism and bashabilty in his cars.

Sadly, his R/C reviewing is in a hiatus at the moment since he is concentrating on LEGO, but I'm sure he'll be back for more R/C soon.

More of my opinions on that topic in these threads:

RC Magazines.

Tamiya knock-offs.

I lost all respect for RCCA when they gave a glowing review of the Juggernaut. Had they actually run it more than just enough to take their photos they would have seen how easily the axle gears grenaded.

Some public liberary, maybe in your area, carries RC magazine. Call up in advance to find out which locations have RC mag. and than go check it out. Is free and one get something back from the taxes paid.

Every hobby I have had there have always been loads of magazines attached to it.

Before the internet I can remember buying 4 Land Rover mags a month only to find similar features usually a month apart.

Over the last few months I have found that one issue of a magazine associated with this hobby is really enjoyable and I read it cover to cover the next month I only read 5 or 6 pages.

My feeling is that if you have the cash to spare and have a broad interest in R/C buy the mags.
