I hope this isn't to unpopular an opinion, but I really have a problem with people that are concerned with what their stuff is worth. I'm in this hobby cause by the time I was 7 years old, I've been fascinated with rc. It'll never be a job or profession. I'll never make any money with my hobby. I do it cause I love it.

I love that Tamiya continues to re release older models. And regular production releases, not that garbage Associated pulled with that tiny run of original RC10s.

Seems to me that most folks here agree with me to some extent. Love of the cars/trucks and for the hobby itself.

Threads dedicated to what some vehicle or part is worth really grinds my gears. What's it worth? Put it on eBay and find out. But don't bother me asking how you can make a quick profit on your stuff.

I don't see a problem with someone asking;

  • If they're sat on a £500 buggy and their intention is to launch it off ramps etc, then knowing what it's worth might stop 'em destroying something valuable when a £50 eBay bargain will do the same job.
  • If they ask in order to sell, where's the harm in that? if it's not their cup of tea then why not find out what it's worth in order to sell it - there's several threads complaining that trade ads here should be forced to include pricing, how is a person to find the value of something if it's not been listed on eBay recently? some of the longer serving members here have great memories for the older stuff - a couple even seem to actively monitor sale prices of certain brands
  • What if they're asking to insure them, or at least make sure they have sufficient cover
  • And, god forbid, if they're asking just to score a few quid, so what? - for every seller there's a buyer - and if telling someone a price so they can sell it means someone else buys it, aren't we just greasing the wheels of the trade machine?

There's no pressure to answer 'what's it worth' threads, but a lot of the members here are happy to help out when the question arises

A prime example; http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=73853&hl=worth - you should give it a read.

You're in denial 'cos you arrived too late to the party. :P

Some (admittedly in the small minority) have collected stuff from early days

and have resold & made enough... to buy even more stuff...

But yeah ppl who buy a rere last week then think its worth double tomorrow as "vintage" deserve cardinal castration.

People ask what is worth could be just trying to find out the market price from the experts here. We are highly regarded here from technical issues, knowing differences of same model but from different batch, know all the screw sizes used by Tamiya....we buy, build, sell, strip, hop up, eat, sleep/dream, crap Tamiya. You ask us how many days are in a week, some of us may not know, but you ask how many plastic bags are used for the Wild Willy model, we can tell you. In the end these individuals won't over sell that is for sure but no one wants to undersell. Is money after all and if some one tells you money is not important lets see this same person do without it.

I personally has no problem with individuals trying to make money or lots of it off this hobby, and some individuals do.

Look at it anyway, if someone ask you a question, it mean he/she thinks you have the answer / expert, else why would he/she even bother. :)

What's known in aviation circles as a 'rivet counter'

People do genuinely haul their old toys out of the loft / garage after 20/30 years, have no interest in it, but want to know how to price to move it on, or sell several on as a job lot. I don't see a problem with them asking the forum, as long as they don't mind the answer, which might be along the lines of, 'well mate, it's a bucket, the bodyshell is shot and the tires are slicks, the bumpers split in half, it's worth about 20 quid in drive shafts, screws, and nuts.' ;)

I personally dont have a problem with it, you see it often on most forums and i think its ok to ask for advice and opinions, its part of what a forum is about.

I dont think Ebay is always a good guide of worth, so value advice here might provide info not just on the base price they will get but maybe some of the history etc of a model.

I don't mind people asking, the only problems I see is when they

describe it as a good runner but They're talking 20 years ago

when they last used it. Probably best if they include pictures,

this at least Gives something to go by. Another problem, sort of,

is people who sign up to TC, ask the question then vanish, leaving

an unused member thingo. Maybe a pre joining section could help, say,

your membership requires 10 posts/replies to confirm. Then they can

ask and get what they need and not 'clog' the system. As someone else mentioned, it's probably not good to use a rare valuable vehicle as

a basher. I bought a WW1 that someone had used as air rifle practice!

I know, if you're the buyer you'd rather they didn't know the value,

but as a seller it's only fair they get what it's worth.

Anyway, that's my 2c worth, i'll go back into my cage.

The only issue I have is members believe other members or sellers should not make big money off their item for sale and are labelled as greedy.

Is free enterprise my friends and one is entitle to make as much money as possible within the law or one's moral. Remember one's moral standard should be higher than the law.

On the other hand is OK to come across an item that was priced at a fraction of what the going rate, throw money at the seller and run with the amazing find.

Double standard.

So long as one does their home work / due deligence, the end results should be fine.

Having asked this question just this year I'm a little flabbergasted.

And this wasn't even for me, I wanted to ensure two things:

- my mate didn't simply throw his cars out in the tip - including original hilux, bruiser and WW!

- he wasn't ripped off if he tried to sell

As it turns out, I'm now restoring them and they may not even sell at all and they definitely won't go to the tip!
