As some of you may have seen, I have somewhat an obsession with the Jurassic Park films (well, mainly the first one). This lead to an as-yet incomplete CC01 Jeep build last year -

I still need to finish that one!

So I set about the forums looking for a Pajero 2nd hand as I figured that would be a good base to start from.

A week later and this is parked on my desk -

Notice the hella-rake body fitment!

It came with some GPM 'upgrades' but I'm not keen on one of them in-particular, that being the 4-link rear setup -

E37DBBBF-99DA-4356-B09F-872F15226963.jpg

I'm not keen since it doesn't seem to offer much articulation? There's also a mish-mash of different hardware/screws on there too which is a pet hate of mine, so they're slowly all getting replaced with stainless hex-head jobbies.

I've also put on some Tamiya 54541 Aluminium oil shocks which have a silky-smooth operation, using the stock springs. Running Lipo this setup still seems a little stiff though, can anyone recommend some softer springs? Perhaps when the body mods are complete the added weight will make some difference.

Next up was the electronics.

I don't want super-fast steering and a metal-geared servo seemed like overkill too, so I've just gone with a nice Futaba S3003 servo for now. Motor is standard silver can for now, but even with the 16T pinion it's way too fast! Not sure 35T will be slow enough, so looking into other solutions right now. I've installed the ESC in the battery tray as Lipo cases don't fit in the slot properly anyway. The ESC is a Hobbywing 1060 waterproof item, hopefully this will be a good test for it as it was incredibly cheap for the quality you get. Finally a Hobbyking receiver sits on the radio tray.

Batteries will sit longidtudinally and held down with a strap.

The inspiration?

I need to decide on a front bumper next, really fancy this one but struggling to find much info online? Does anyone have one?

Can't decide on wheels either, have the following 5-spoke options:

Or

Leaning towards the second option as they also afford me a bit more offset which looks better. Either way they'll be painted green like the body.

If I go for the second option am I right in thinking that a quick go in the dishwasher will take the chrome finish off?

Looking forward to this matey (fellow JP nut), I too stalled with my JP Jeep as I got a bit daunted with the paint work. I'll definitely be picking it up soon though.

Re the bumper, what info are you after as there's loads of those bumpers on eBay, seem to come in loads of different flavours too: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131074423144

On the wheels, I too prefer the second ones, they suit the Pajero body much better IMO

I think the second option for wheels looks more like those in the photo of the Pajero mentioned in the first post. As an opinion, I am inclined more towards those.

A Jurassic Park scheme would look great on such a robust vehicle!

Sorted the battery 'strap' - bonus points for whoever recognises the part I've used!

A quick test drive on a 2s lipo shows that I've inadvertently created a wheelie monster! I may need to get rid of that silver can.

Incidentally, that silver can came from my F103GT kit and has red and black motor wires instead of green and yellow - is it any different specification-wise? Seems quick, but that could just be the Lipo.

One concern I have over that bumper I looked at on eBay is how easy it will be to remove / refit the body, since you have to lift the body up from the front to remove it. Keen to find someone who has the same bumper before I splash the cash!

That would be a FAV bumper support ;)

Good point about removing the body shell, I see why you need some advice on it now, will be interesting to see what the answer is as I want something similar for my Pajero although I don't intend to fit a winch so I may just go for the Radshape one.

I need a winch so I can recreate this grisly scene in my child-like imagination -

But if you read the description, the Radshape RC item says it has a plate for fitting a winch?!

I remember having had some JP action figures along with the Dinosaur toys back then in the mid '90s. They weren't 1/10 scale, were they? Otherwise the Holiday Buggy driver figure head could be for good use as hunter Robert Muldoon or Dr Alan Grant.

I love the first Jurassic Park movie, as well as both novels by Michael Chrichton. :)

I had he same figures! Unfortunately they're a bit small as it did prompt me to have a look on eBay. I've sourced a Holiday Buggy driver head for the Jeep - the Pajero isn't likely to get an interior unless I can get some clear windows cheep (again, enquiries have been made though!) I suck at painting figures though - hence the jeep not yet being finished :(

My Mrs thinks I'm mental but has accepted me as I am haha, I write this now as Jurassic Park 3 has just started on ITV2...

Stuck the split rims in the dishwasher to strip the chrome off, worked like a charm...sort of...

...on all but one rim! Totally unaffected by the dishwasher (apart from being extra clean now!). What do we reckon then, different playing process maybe?

For an authentic JP2-vehicle, you could always get this body :P (Being on a touring car chassis, width is about 180mm and wheelbase 260mm, so the body is suitable for the CC-01 chassis in slightly modified LWB-configuration).

Ha, that's amazing. Bet they're not easy to come by though?

I also considered finding a New Bright M Class but they're virtually impossible to find and when I did, they were £77!

The complete kit pops up on German eBay now and then (there are two of them at the moment) and a quick search found one in a German hobbyshop's online shop, but the chassis is practically useless, so it would be an expensive body. The body set is harder to find, but when they do pop up on eBay, they sell for reasonable prices as it's not that sought after.

Mr Muscle oven cleaner in the grey aerosol with an orange lid will remove the chrome. Just pop it in a sealable sandwich bag, give it a quick squirt and seal the bag for 15 mins then rinse with water.

Another late night 'incident' saw some more cash splashed over on Asiatees, instead of waiting for my eBay items to sell I've spent the money I've yet to make (I'm sure we're all guilty of this a little!).

45T motor, some TA03 bits for another project, some rubber shielded bearings and some Axial light buckets (cheapest place I've found them!).

I also started painting the wheels.

For the body, I've got plans to do some camo-style paint and the only green I have so far is Tamiya NATO green. Can anyone recommend a colour which will compliment it but brighter like the colour scheme on the above Mercedes?

Posted

I have already got TS-61 Nato Green for the dark green accents -

85061.jpg

And was thinking that AS-23 Light Green might suffice for the lighter shades -

86523.jpg

However, my local supplier doesn't have it in stock and prices + postage on 1 can of paint seem to run into the £12 territory, which is a bit rich for 100ml!!

So I'm thinking of swinging by my local Hobbycraft or The Range to see what off-the-shelf spray paints they have which might be a suitable colour? Anyone have any experience using these?

Went into B&Q yesterday and they stock "Valspar" paint. £3.48 a can - the internetz tells me it might be rubbish - but I am going to give it a go on my RM-01 build and be wary of thin coats and warming the can etc... Certainly better value than £7+ for a can of Tamiya paint (unless its rubbish of course lol)

Checked hobby craft and only had a limited range of colours (I sort of anticipated as much) so went to The Range and picked up a big can of Hunter Green acrylic spray paint by Plasticote. I've used this stuff on car parts before and it seems fairly durable, so fingers crossed! Plus it's a camo scheme so shouldn't need perfectly crisp lines and like you say, I'll warm the can and spray in very fine coats in an effort to keep it even....

Now to strip the chrome from the Pajero body - seems like sacrilege!

Wheels are black, will get a coat of green next but didn't want the green behind the spokes (if that makes sense?!)

IMG_3402.jpg

I like these tyres, but they're really hard. As such they don't offer up much grip (I was testing the Pajero the other day on the laminate floor. It drifts really well!)

Is there a tyre which fits the 1.9 wheels but doesn't require any cutting up of the body? I'll need 5, obviously one for the spare wheel. Just don't want to spend a fortune.

F350 tyres rub, as do the 96mm Ansmann crawler tyres :(

Posted

The ansmann Kong style tyres are also available in 90mm diameter which is pretty close to the originals. They'll give you a lot more grip.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121311484280

Aye, these will fit nicely - I use them on mine.. They are a very close match to the originals in terms of diameter, but are a bit wider than the originals, and grip far better. You'll still need to do a tiny bit of trimming to the back of the front bumper to stop them rubbing at full lock, but the area to be trimmed is only visible from the underside, and if you do it neatly it will look factory anyway.

Posted

Which leads me onto my next question, does anyone want to go halvsies on a pair so I can have 5 tyres, one for the spare wheel?!

Or if anyone already has a spare tyre that they have no use for? Will ask a it on the crawler forums.
