I have friend who makes slot car products and I asked him if he can see if he can make steel pinion gears for the lunch box and pumpkin chassis.. anyone think this is something worth doing?

I sent him a new pinion and he will see how much and how many his guy who makes his stuff will charge and I might make them if it's worth doing.

any thoughts welcome.

It sounds interesting however the lunchie gearbox is widely regarded as being near indestructible even with high power motors so I'm not sure it's worth the effort?

Aye, the brass pinion that is supplied with the LB and MP kits is pretty tough already. It is unlikely that there would be much demand for an upgrade.

Now the soft alloy pinions that come with the Hornet range and DT01/02/03 kits - that is another story! True 0.8 module steel pinion gears that mesh silently with Tamiya spurs are quite rare. There may well be a market for those...

I'd be interested in steel versions of these two types of long proprietary brass pinions:

#3505014: Module 0.8, 10T. Length = ?mm, Grub screw location = ?mm from motor side.

- 58058 Ford F-150 Ranger Blackfoot

- 58060 Monster Beetle
- 58077 Mud Blaster
- 58101 Bush Devil
- 58110Super Blackfoot
- 58192 King Blackfoot

#3505015: Module 0.8, 10T. Length = ?mm, Grub screw location = ?mm from motor side.

- 58063 Vanessa's Lunch Box
- 58070 Ford F-100 Midnight Pumpkin
- 58347 Vanessa's Lunch Box re-release
- 58499 Mitsubishi Montero/Pajero Wheelie
- 58557 Unimog 406 Wheelie

From my own experience, the brass pinions last better than soft alloy pinions, but not as good as steel ones.

I've got no experience with mod 0.6 hardened alloy pinions supplied with some newer Tamiya kits (e.g. TT-02) or as hop-ups yet.

Regular (non-proprietary) steel pinions are covered by Carson Modelsport/Dickie-Tamiya in the German and EU market. They mesh fine with Tamiya metric spur gears, are advertised as official hop-up options in the German Tamiya R/C catalogues and are legal in German Tamiya racing classes. The Carson steel pinions are offered in these metric module pitches:

- 0.4 (20T to 49T)

- 0.6 (12T to 29T)

- 0.8 (10T to 19T)

Well 158 views and only one person interested ...guess it's not a good item to try and make...myself though it would be a hot item that would be great to make but I guess not.

I think it'd be a great idea, but I just don't see lunchbox parts being that sought after. This is the only place I go for lunchbox info.

It would be a nice-to-have item for the ORV family, since they all use proprietary pinion and spur gears that aren't covered by re-releases. Especially the spur gears (Called "counter gear" from the gear bag 9335026) for 58058, 58060 and 58077 are often found damaged by worn brass pinions in well-used cars, and pristine ones are tough to chase after.

Having a good-quality steel pinion gear that would preserve the "counter gear" from gear bag 9335026, as well as the Super/King Blackfoot spur gears would be great.

Lunchbox brass pinions however are still widely available from the re-releases, as well as the corresponding transmission gears.
