Tamiya make a good sprue cutter nice to handle and sharp with very clean cuts.

Hope this helps

I've just bought what Swarm is showing. They're a little on the small side, but they do have a blade that appears to cut right on the edge of the jaws. I think I got mine for around 12 quid on the bay of tat from HK.

I think they are perfect every Tamiya kit and other kit I have built its has worked flawlessly ,if you come across a thicker bit on the sprue run around it with the side cutters "ring bark it would be a better term" then cut it works for me every time .

I've been using the cutters from this set (74016)

They were amazing! Better than the ones above, but they have now retired as they've lost their "bite". The rest of the tools in the kit aren't that great, but the cutters made it worthwhile.

I use Klien tools d275-5 lightwieght cutters, they are pricey but probably the best. You can cut solid wire(like 14/2 house wire) all day long and they wont dull. They cut spures like butter too.

Thanks chaps, didn't think I'd get this many responses so quickly ha ha. I like the look of those one dualdigger, will have a google.

Since I use the Tamiya Modeler's Side Cutter #74093, I'd never want to go back to cheap cutters again. Swarm mentioned them too, they're available in a variety of colours.

I'm using it for plastic modelling where it does an outstanding precise job.

For cutting metal rods and sheets, I use dedicated metal cutters.

I've been meaning to pick up a set of Xuron cutters. Model railway guys use them for cutting metal track and they're supposed to be so good it doesn't need any filing or cleaning up afterwards. Should go through plastic sprue like it isn't there.

Hmm, I'm really confused with all the choices now, just looked up Xuron cutters and there's like a million choices. Any idea which are the ones to go for as some look cheap (too cheap)?

Klein cutters look to be the best idea. I am still soldiering on with a 3-year old Tamiya Plastic Side Cutter, though, and it has worked quite well. I used it to cut ice hockey stick tape with great results in addition to sprues, and most recently used it on my WR-02 build. Almost every cut was clean - given its current age and amount of usage, the slip-ups are forgiven.

I think I spent $7.99 CAD on my pair, thinking how it was well worth the investment. I have been proven correct!

Well after much deliberation I've just ordered a set of the Klien D275-5 from an eBay seller in the states. Thanks for all your help guys.

Wow, that's was fast! Ordered Friday, arrived today - from the States!!!

Seem to be very high quality, that's without actually cutting anything yet though.

We have the Xuron ones at my local hobby shop, I am just a bit dubious about the 'offset blades' they rave on about on the back of the packet, about how they last longer than conventional tip to tip blades and still cut straight...

I wouldn't mind a decent set of side cutters as at the moment I use either some small hobby style wire cutter/stripper things or some of the missus' spare beauty side nail cutter thingies <_<

I used the Klein ones last night on a Twin Hammers cage (the same cage that broke my last cutters. The Klein cutters went through it like butter, totally different world!
