Hello,

I'm looking for a Brushed ESC that will enable me to go straight into reverse with no break or pause. I will also need it to be able to go full speed in reverse not at a reduced rate like my current Tamiya one.

So far I have found the Quicrun 1060 60A, but the specs only list half the amps in reverse. Is that likely to mean it will only go half speed in reverse?
I have also seen the Tekin FXR Pro which has 11 power settings for reverse low to full (as far as I know) but is a lot more expensive than the Quicrun.

I'm going to be using it for J turns and all sorts of gear mangling tricks which I accept means replacing these parts in due course.

Any one have experience of either of these ESCs or a alternative for under £100?

Unlikely anything designed for a car will have that sort of feature. It's there to protect the gears, which won't last long going from 100% forwards to 100% backwards.

If you have a chance to read through the manual, see if any of your current esc's have a 'punch' feature which can be programmed.

This is more common on brushless systems, but serves to further protect gears/drivetrain whilst also working a bit like traction control on some 'mad' setups like my buggy, which backflips from a standstill on anything above 60% punch.

I guess don't necessarily need it to go from 100% forward to 100% reverse in an instant. Its more the opposite in fact.

At least from a stand still, I would like to be able to go straight into reverse and build up speed to the same top speed I would get going forwards.
Once I have reached a good speed in reverse I completely let go of the throttle stick while a hard left/right turn 180's the car round.

It's mostly this double tap reverse and reduced reverse power that's griping me. For example I would be happy enough to be going forward at any speed then hitting reverse. The esc can then brake me to a complete halt first before giving me full reverse. I just don't want to be flapping the stick around to make that happen. The Tamiya one I have now sometimes ignores this command and I have to flap it about 2-3 times before It goes into reverse at a snails pace.

Most Rock crawler ESC's have this feature..

Castle Sidewinder ESC maybe??

Axial AE-2 ESC from their RTR's, depending on the motor you plan to use? (Possibly made by Castle as well)

Yeah a MSC would be great I have this setup in the TL-01 Chassis I'm running but wanted to be able to do similar stunts in the TT-02D I'm building. Not sure that the TT-02 could accommodate all the gubbins for a MSC.

Some good suggestions have been made I do like the look of the SpeedMaster that Twinset mentioned I like the idea of psychical relays switching between forward and reverse.

I've got a lot more to go on now, thanks for the help guys ill let you know my end result.

Well after having a good look round I decided on the Tekin FX-R Pro. It cost just under £100 so a big spend particularly for a brushed setup, but it's such a good ESC. There's no turn limit and its compatible with LiPo batteries which will probably be my next purchase. Its got the choice of breaking no breaking and instant reverse. There are 11 reverse settings from very slow to full speed. The drag brake setting is fun to play around with but I'll probably disable it normally. It is possible to hook it up to a computer but you can actually program everything using the two buttons and referencing the instructions, very easy.

One thing I would say is that its quite hard to solder onto the little terminals, you can see in the picture where my lack of iron control has struck. In the end I pulled apart a couple of Tamiya power plugs and used two thin pliers to tease out the little metal tube like contacts. I stretched them out just enough to just slide of the Tekins terminals. They gripped on pretty well but I did add a dab of solder on the tips of the terminals to make sure they wouldn't budge. Much easier to solder there now the makeshift spades are in place.

I've only test fitted it for now just to make sure it all works. I'll be putting it in my TT-02D Drift Spec - Lexus IS200 build. You can find this build in the Builds section of this forum which is still in progress currently.

The Tekin "Hotwire" interface makes programming so much easier than pressing buttons and counting flashes, but it is quite expensive given what it is..

Its a must have though if you ever upgrade to a Brushless RS ESC though.. Its quite fun playing with the "Turbo" and "Boost" settings and seeing what difference they make..
