SRBs Butterfly Chassis anyone?

Recommended Posts

I was looking for a stock length Butterfly chassis for my upcoming project for a Ford 150 Ranger XLT. There are couple of them on evilbay this year. Prices were ranging from $125 to $200. Outrageous prices too. So I decided to make one myself. I have an original long chassis on my Rough Rider. I took it apart and did a direct scan. From the direct scan and the precise measurement from the disassembly chassis, I did a template artwork. Both the long and stock chassis are on the same artwork as well as the mounting holes for the stock and wide front end. I also corrected the Tamiya radio box slot on the original Butterfly chassis.

Here are the Dropbox links to the direct scan and my template artwork. When you open the link, if the create an account appears, you don't have to create an account. Just X it out and click download again. Both are one to one scale and save in pdf file. Please select actual size when printing. The print will be exactly one to one scale. There is a ruler on the artwork for checking the accuracy of your printer. The exact measurement on the width of the chassis is 76mm or 2.99213 inch. When you place a ruler over the artwork ruler, it should match exactly and precisely.

I just did a short chassis in 1/8 or 0.125 inch G10 FR4 black fiberglass plate with just basics hand tools.

Here are some links for ordering fiberglass plate in Canada and the US:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#grade-g-10-garolite-sheets/=u2imsv

http://www.eplastics.com/G10_FR4_Glass_Epoxy_Sheet

1/8 or 0.125 inch is the standard thickness for Butterfly chassis. I order two 12 x 12 inches from eplastics. One black and one natural. Each plate is enough for making 2 chassis It seems eplastics has the best price. Make sure you ask for a shipping quote before you place your order.

Any comments are welcome!

Fine work! I will be nationalistic and chalk this up to Canadian ingenuity ;)

But in all seriousness, that will be a very useful upgrade for many SRBs to come!

Why a shorter chassis?

Max

The original Butterfly chassis comes in two different length. The short one is the same length as the Tamiya SRB chassis and the long one is about an inch longer than the stock one. The original Tamiya plastic body will only fit on the short/stock chassis. The long one only work on aftermarket longer Lexan body.

That's rad Yellowcat. I would just like to say its refreshing to know there are still dudes around willing to help others, out of the goodness of their own heart. It's something you don't see every day. Looks like you made it quite easy for anyone to punch out their own aftermarket chassis. One of the coolest posts I've read here on TC.

My hats off to ya mate. Nice one!

Hi SMOOTHEE,

Yes, I made it easy for anyone to punch out their own Butterfly chassis. Why pay $125 which you can cut one yourself for less than $10. Just print out the template and mount it onto the fiberglass plate with glue stick and cut it. Please remember to wear a mask for the fiberglass and epoxy resin dust. Very bad for your health.

Great job on that template. Since you're going to use it for an XLT, why not go totally custom. Square up the front end which would allow more surface room and you could make fender wells for the front

Hi Shodog,

Thanks for your idea. I have something similar in mind. I have extended the wing by one inch for more surface room and it works nicely with the front tires.

Hello All,

I would like to know if my scan and template artwork print out OK?

Does it comes out as one to one scale on your printer?

Do you need to make any percentage adjustment ?

Thanks!

Hi Yellowcat, Thanks for allowing the use of your templates for both the butterfly chasi and the dual shock mounts. I have just printed them off and both printed perfectly to scale. Im using a canon mp495 printer.

Cheers Shaun

Really interested in this. Do you have photos with the dual shock mount? Also what length shocks are used? I want to use 70mm front and rear, do you know if they are for standard 60mm ones?

Here is the link to my rear dual shock mount. This shock mount is for the stock long front shocks. It is not for the rear short shock.

I might do a a front long shock mount template for the SRB. It recently sold on ebay for $60.

Also check out my custom SRBs.
