Can't say i'm much of a fan of the stock Tamiya battery connectors - they never come together without a fuss.

If you were to change to a more user friendly connector, what would be your choice?

I have a mix of deans and XT60 but I seem to prefer the XT60's, I think I find them easier to solder so they have become my standard more or less.

I use Deans connectors since most modern speed controllers and batteries come equipped with them anyways. I've changed my older brushed-only-speed controller leads and NiMH batterie leads to Deans, too.

Disconnecting Deans isn't very comfortable in my opinion, but on the other hand this means the connection itself is very strong, reliable and can handle high currents. They don't waste a lot of space, which can be handy in some chassis types.

When i first moved away from Tamiya molex plugs, i thought long and hard, i wanted something that was cheap, could take higher current and most of all for me, easy to solder. I first went with losi EC3 and for a while found them perfect, but as some of my cars are brushless i wanted something a bit beefier, so ive been using the losi EC5 connectors for a few years now, i buy in bulk from hobbyking.
