Hi all-

Hi all...I'm Off my feet of late because of an indoor soccer injury so have been building tamiyas!. I just completed my midnight pumpkin and ordered a DT-03 for $130 USD off of Amazon. It's shipping from Japan. I'm going to put ball bearings in it of course. Are these kits still shipping with the CVA dampers and torque tuned motos as stock? If not then I'll certainly need the oil filled dampers. I have a HPI 15T thunderbolt and compatible esc as well as a tamiya 23t super stock bz on my bench. Will the super stock be too much for the tale-02s? I also like the looks of the carbon shock stays but don't know I'd there's a point to that. Dt-02 aluminum motor plate? Stabilizer set?

I run 5000 mAh NiMH batteries with Tamiya connectors.

I suppose I could grab a 13.5T sensored brushless motor but I do not really know how to solder on the leads...

Right now I like the idea of the torque tuned in the Pumpkin and super stock in the DT-03.

Other than bearings...is there anything I should have?

Thanks in advance and don't ever dislocate your patella!

The TBLE-02S isn't approved for the SuperStock motors, so it would be wise to use your HPI speed controller.

The DT-02/DT-03 alloy motor mount and heat sink set is only useful for closed can motors, but not for open endbell motors.

Stabilizers do not offer advantages on this chassis.

Go for the ball bearings first. The car itself is sturdy and will take abuse with no worries in stock form.

The alloy pinion is on the weak side if used with powerful motors. A steel pinion (module 0.8, 17 teeth) is strongly recommended. For everything else, have a run with your car and see if it pleases you. You'll then see what you want to improve in the form of spending money on, e.g. tires for your type of surface.

Thanks Greg. Good point. I have to admit, 98% of the fun for me is tinkering with these and seeing how fast I can make it to the oak tree and back. Carbon stays and the like are just ways for me to spend money.

I should go to LiPo and brushless because that'd sure help. I do wish there was a track around here....

Greg: can you please post a link for that pinion.

hi ,

as far as i am aware the extra dampers ,esc etc are a permanent feature of the 'fighter buggy' edition of the dt-03 , i havent read any reports of it coming without them

i have found the most essential hop ups after bearings are, a high torque servo saver (with long arm) , tamiya or x-ray are perfect but there are others ,

and as gregm said , correct tyres , but the kit ones are quite nice for very short grass and hard pack dirt ,

the tamiya hop ups are rather nice and fairly cheap too , so it wont break the bank to get the whole shebang just for the fun of having a dt-03 all hopped up but, for fun running they are not needed at all.

after a quick run with the torque tuned i went straight for a 13.5 brushless motor with my tble-02s , it is far happier when turning brushless than brushed , if you go for 13.5 brushless you can run a 19t pinion and the esc will just get warm, but even with 17t pinion on the 'torque tuned brushed motor', the esc got very hot and IMO was on its limit ,

do consider going for a LiFePO4 battery for sole use with the tble-02 , it was made with life batteries in mind and works very well with them , they are cheap too .

have fun :)

Hey. Thanks. I would like to foray into brushless. The 13.5t turnigy sensored would work and everyone seems to like it. Is soldering on the leads easy? Do they come with the motor or do I buy them? Apologies for the goofy questions. I'll have a look on YouTube I reckon.

Sorry, I've no idea if steel pinions are available in the US. Specs you should look for:

- Pitch: 0.8 module (32dp pitch comes close, but aren't the same even if some sellers claim so)

- Teeth: 17T (for hot motors), 19T (for slow motors, e.g. Mabuchi RS-540SH)

- Bore: 1/8 inch or 3.17mm

In the UK and Germany, these are distributed by Carson Modelsport and Robinson Racing, and sold through various sellers.

From what I have heard, 32dp comes at least close enough to 0.8 module. But do not buy Traxxas pinions, they do not mesh well with Tamiya spur gears.

RRP 8717 seems to have 5mm bore. It would need an adaptor sleeve (if such a thing exists) for mounting on 3.17mm motor shafts.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__7028__Turnigy_Accucel_6_50W_6A_Balancer_Charger_w_Accessories.html , needs a 12v dc power supply,

the charger i use is actually an xtreme x605 but it is identical in operation and build to the turnigy item , if i was personally buying a new charger right now it would be one of these ,

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__49420__X100_AC_DC_100W_Touch_Screen_Charger_US_Plug_.html ,

you would have to solder on connectors to the motor and the battery , the motor is simple to solder , only three wires , the battery is only two , even if you had to get a local shop to solder them up it should only cost a few bucks ,

Thanks!!!! This setup >> than my ESC with the super stock BZ I imagine? This is exactly what I needed....the links.

One last thing...do you use Tamiya connectors so they work with the ESC?

Thanks again for the links. My midnight pumpkin is completed as of yesterday and I'm already thinking of new ways to waste money.
