I thought I had a brilliant idea, a Cannonball Run ambulance, out of a lunchbox, obviously. Then I saw there's a seller on ebay making perfect decal sheets for it. Just too easy for a buildoff.

Looking for advice on my idea.

My current two choices both require a solid axle rwd chassis. I'm not sure what Tamiya chassis I should start with. Without giving away my ideas, I'm looking to build in a classic American hot rod/drag race style. I don't think a hornet/lunchbox rear will work. the Hi Lift is just to industrial, and I don't think the cc-01 will work as rwd only.

The easiest would be an rc4wd trail stomper, but since that's not a Tamiya...

You should be fine using other manufacturers parts, not just Tamiya. And you can run a CC01 as RWD... or FWD if the mood takes you :D You can pick up SCX10 axles or Maverick Scout parts on eBay to get a solid rear axle. Then you'll just need a drive shaft with a crawler style spur & pinion set up.

Depends how much detail you add . Working lights , HIM driving lol . Could be cool

As this is the Tamiyaclub forum, most people will probably be entering Tamiya-based projects, and if the build-off winner is going to be decided via the traditional vote, most people would probably vote for a Tamiya entry.

That said, the forum does have a section for other makes, so presumably other makes would also be allowed in the build-off. Probably wouldn't win, but if you are just taking part for the fun of it, that may not matter.

My build is purely for fun so no issues here

OK so it looks like On Screen has made it as the theme for this year's build off :)

The build-off is just for fun so I don't think it necessarily needs to be a Tamiya kit, I'm happy to see any ideas. Would be awesome to see anyone's custom chassis ideas.

I've got a few different ideas, one has definitely been done here on TC within the last year or two (and it's one of the only showroom entries for that model) but it means I don't need to buy any additional stuff as I've already got the kit. The other I have almost all the bits but requires some custom work. The third, needs me to buy a whole new kit (or at least a body) and either do some custom chassis alterations or build up another TLT-based truck out of spare axles.

hmm, decisions decisions!!

So what's the etiquette with this? I assume we're not to start building until 1st Dec. Are we doing build threads (if you want to) and if so will they be collated into a 2014 Winter build thread section? Or should we keep quiet until the big reveal?

Might be worth discussing a few gentle rules or procedures so we're all singing from the same hymn sheet so to speak :)

I just finally decided last night. I may be able to pull it off, maybe not. But I'm gonna try.

I'm also curious about what Crispy asked.

I'm doing some research and planning but wont be buying or building Till December... Mine is not a massive custom job though, more body work then anything else to be honest..

I didn't want to go overboard with rules as it's about having fun and doing something you want, but how's this to get started?

2014 Winter Build-Off Etiquette

  • Theme is "On Screen" - interpret this as you will (pretty sure we've all got this now :D )
  • How you interpret the theme is up to you - as it's not a competition, you can't be disqualified but if you do something obscure people might want an explanation in the build thread ;)
  • Use whatever kit / kits / parts / RTRs / custom stuff / bits of old washing machine, doesn't have to be Tamiya, the spirit of the build-off is we all try to do something fun and maybe have a chance to try doing custom things that we wouldn't normally do so it's an opportunity to get creative and learn new things
  • You can do as little as a paint job or as much as a custom chassis with machined axles and scratch-build body, it's up to you to decide what you want to do and whether you want to push your skills or just relax and have an easy build
  • Build-off officially starts on 1st Dec and ends 31st Jan* but feel free to buy / collect kit / parts / paint etc in advance
  • Feel free to create your own build thread. Prefix your thread title with WBO2014 so we can see which builds are for the build-off. Build threads are not mandatory if you don't want to
  • If you want to enter for voting you must post a few** pictures of your finished model by end of 31st Jan

*I see no problem with those who have already started as this isn't a "competition", just a bit of fun - I don't want to exclude anyone on a technicality.

**I hate being prescriptive with rules but how about we say at least 2 photos? Mostly applies to those not doing build threads.

Personally I don't see an issue if people want to do more than one build - if you're loaded or you want to do a couple of easy builds rather than one hard one, I think that's OK, and I guess they could be entered as two separate builds or, if you were being really clever (for example, making both Smokey and the Bandit ;) ) you could enter as a single special build. Does anyone have an issue with this?

We could open a vote on 1st Feb to allow people to choose their favourite build, but again this will all be down to personal preference and very subjective, as the rules are vague and there is no prize or reward for being first (other than pride and smugness :) )

I'm not sure about a thread amalgamation after the event but I guess it won't be too hard to collate the best bits of everyone's build thread / finished photos into a nice "best of" catalog for posterity. I'll try to set aside a day in February to do this :)

If anyone has any issue with the above rules or wants to add / amend any, please reply here.

Maybe next year we can make the rules a bit more official (although I don't want them so prescriptive they exclude people from taking part)

I'm going to be stepping away from this one - I was building something with a 'zombie apocolypse' theme already and was just kind of hopeful the poll would go in favour of that. I don't have any ideas for a TV theme that I would want to own in my collection either.

I'll post my build thread over christmas anyway and I'm in no way throwing a tantrum over it, I just look forward to seeing and reading lots of quality build threads!

Me too. Serves me right for not voting, but I'd clicked the link before I realised that disabled my vote.

However, I really like this and I'm really looking forward to seeing what people dream up. The rules seem spot-on to me, it's all about fun.

I have a couple of planned builds already, but if I can come up with a new idea for this then I'll join in if I can. There might be a pretty easy one relating to my all time favourite TV programme...

All sounds spot on to me. Can't wait to see how people have interpreted the theme differently.

I almost think I'm about certain that I'm pretty sure I've finally just about decided what I'm going to build... well definitely down to a couple of choices, maybe three... I think :D

Reilluor & StrokerBoy - There's plenty of zombie films and games out there, can't see how you couldn't say your ZA build was inspired by those and still join in, it's all for fun.

Mr Crispy makes a valid point - zombies seem to be back in fashion in TV right now. Some of the more apocalyptic zombie films of old have had some interesting cars.

I still haven't exactly decided on my project yet but I'll be going through the parts bin later tonight to see what I can come up with. Got a few ideas but still not utterly settled... Got an old film on order from Amazon as it might inspire me ;)

Just join in guys . this is just for fun with no grand prize so i dont think anyone will shout foul so long as its ' inspired by ' . So what if its not a exact movie copy as long as its cool and fun to build .
