Although I have never owned one I like the Frog box art the best for its "captured in mid air motion" look. Other favorites would be the Lunch Box and Manta Ray.

Like the people who were probably not expecting the Lancia Rally ... to look like this!

It is very misleading and I can see why some people might be disappointed. Personally though I love the cartoonish-look of the original Lancia Rally (and Quattro/Ascona), like a Monster Truck rally car. Not interested in the later much-more-realistic 037 kit at all.

As for the best box-art : Lunchbox and Pumpkin every time.

Look, there's a rear trailing arm suspension. :)

I wonder if the boxart is intentional this way, or if there ever were initial plans to release the Grasshopper with this type of suspension instead of the solid rear axle we all know.

The same sort of thing happened on the Ford Ranger - I've long been of the opinion that it looks like that was originally intended to be a 3speed with live axles and leaf springs.

When you look at the accuracy of boxart on kits like the Holiday Buggy, where it accurately portrays the kit and not the 1:1, it's strange the Ranger's boxart varies so much from the kit.

My childhood was spent with Tamiya Jr truck kits, so I think I prefer their boxart a bit more. Somehow they look more squat and compact in the boxart and I preferred that look. Plus, when you bought a Tamiya Jr, you got a collage of different boxarts on the inside bottom of the box. I remember lusting over the bottom of my Midnight Pumpkin Jr box for hours, dreaming that I'd be able to collect them all and have an entire fleet of Tamiya Jrs.

Of those, I think my favourites were the Lunch Box and the Nissan King Cab.

Now that makes sense. Before i can never figuired how Tamiya could put a PU body on a buggy chassis. No red , white and blue, apply pie with

a 1911 side arm Bubba would have a VW engine at the back of their PU. I sure like to know how Tamiya made that decision.

To be fair, I probably like the Frog boxart best,

But there's just something about that first love:

Gold wheels, great model depiction, lots of action! Droolworthy!

The one thing that always upset me about that box art was that the screws weren't drawn correclty ^_^

My favourite is the Dynastorm!! :)

BTW, I recently got a 58116 Dynastorm (1992) from SidewaysDave and I noticed that the glue on one corner of the box edge was coming apart a little bit. On the inside it says "Illustration by K.*******umura, Design by M.Tamiya" - I did a quick google search for K.*******umura but did not find too much around - anyone know any history as to this clearly talented individual?

Pretty sure he is the fella on the previous page painting the 959 boxart. I think from memory reading Tamiyas master modeler book he has done the majority of boxart for all models. (I think there were one or two others, vaguely).

Anyone else notice the front diffs on the lunchbox and pumpkin? Also the extreme positive camber (which looks cool) on the rear of the lunchbox and then the solid axle right above the picture B)
