I probably should have started my lad on a crawler motor, he's 5 going on 6 and thinks the 540 is too slow

Don't think I saw a modified motor till I was about 13

Think it depends on the space you have. We have lots of grass but not much hard stuff so a 540 just spins and goes nowhere. I am sure he and me will graduate to much faster things as we go and then my girl, 3, can have the crawler.

Yeah we usually run either on the road outside, or in the back garden which is artificial grass (due to my dog digging up the real turf, but that's another story)

You can run pretty much any tire on artificial grass, even slicks if the motor is fast enough :)

I thought it was about time I took a look at the diff and drive. I did not build this so I thought i best check it was all steel.

Looks like the back end from a DT-01 would fit

Gears look good, not much grease but I will solve this :)

Reassembled with a O-ring on each pinion. Should give an amount of limited slip without total lock up

All back together and the axle seems to be good but we will not know to I get to back on the wet grass

From your photo, it would appear that the gearbox has been adequately greased. One doesn't want a large quantity of grease creating drag in the gearbox and weighing it down. As long as there is a thin layer on the mating surfaces of any moving parts, that is fine. Some racers don't use grease at all, instead opting for a dry lube or light oil.

Well yesterday the poor thing had 6 under fives driving for 1.5 hours. The motor is perfect speed for this age and the battery lasted the full time.

It only came to an abrupt end when I fail to spot a I small river hidden in a dip and totally submerged it. It dried out over night and ran well today so all is good in the short term.

The o rings on the diff worked perfectly day 1 and the rear had real traction on the wet grass. It wore off today though and went back to spinning one wheel and failing to put the power down. Will have to strip it and see what has happened.

Not that it was worth watching

I will try and do some more when I trust the boy in control and can hold the camera properly.

I wouldn't say that. The video gives a good idea of the speed of the model on 80t, which looks quite kid-friendly. It might encourage other dads to try something similar.

Agree with XV as this has just illustrated perfectly what I wanted to know as regards slowing down Tam RCCs, as I would like to get a little basher for dad's partners grandsons to have a play with when they come to stay :D

P.S. Loving the mittens on string ;)

They were ramming each other's ankles at full chat and there were very few tears. They also hit everything solid within a mile and did not manage to do too much damage to the car.

Now that's the sort of thing I'm looking for ;)

Might even do that for myself...:ph34r::ph34r::lol::lol::lol:

I realise that you have got them kinda used to the stick type of TX but what about a lightweight pistol type such as the ones that come with the RTR/XB kits. The one that came with my Lunchie only has four AA batteries

I thought about that but not sure if I can get my head around how you learn to use one. Sticks are very much self explanatory.

I feel the same, in fact one of the reasons I wanted the Lunchie XB that I got last Christmas was that I could see if I got on with the pistol grip without having to lay out for one. i'm glad I did as I still prefer the stick version. hence I did lay out on one of these :D
