Just wondering how you all add to your collections.

Do you have a long wish list? Or do you just see what's available and go for it.

Is price a factor? Would you buy a model you're not particularly keen on if it was cheap enough?

Or do you see others post stuff on here and think "I'd like one of those"

After selling off most of my collection a couple years ago I'm still on the road back, and I've decided my next two will be a Striker and a Manta Ray, as they were my first two Tamiya's almost 25 years ago :)

Price is definitely a factor for me. And if I come across something I'd like to have then that's how my song with Tamiya has been. I rarely am looking for specific stuff, in most cases I just happen to come across things. That, along patience has definitely paid for me. Friends have helped with projects here, and then of course you can tick luck as a pretty serious factor in the hobby. Or it has been pretty much like that for me at least.

I have a very scientific method of selecting my ... OOOH SQUIRREL!! - uh, what was I saying? Why does my charge card receipt show that I used "buy it now" to purchase a squirrel?

I also have used the "shiny object" method, the "see it, want it, buy it" method, the "I wonder what that is?" method and even occasionally the "what's one more" method.

I have many in progress rides. None are finished. And whenever something strikes my fancy, I scratch the itch. Like the rc4wd trail stomper that the mailman will be delivering tomorrow.

Price helps me determine my purchases, but mostly in that I still do not have a 3-speed!

I just keep going through old catalogues and promotional videos, read up on the forum, and in general just keep engaged with any RC content to decide what is next. Sometimes it has been inspiration - running my RC cars in the winter had me thinking of a Lancia Rally. Settings work, too - a beach trip saw me purchase a Buggy Champ, and grassy fields had me thinking of a WR-02.

Otherwise, something in my regular RC immersion sets off my choice for another car. I think it was an Avante Black Special at my local hobby shop and talk of it on TamiyaClub that led me to buy one!

Strictly vintage, however, it has been immersion and circumstance. The Astute, Audi Quattro, and Striker have found their way into my collection at some point from those promotional videos and catalogues...

Most of my purchases were to fulfill my wish list that I started thinking about in high school with a lot of influence from 80's and 90's RC magazines. Price never used to be a factor but my circumstances have now called a halt to my collecting when it comes to new kits. I will just enjoy the ones I have and keep them running, maybe make some smaller purchases to improve them like the oil shocks I bought for the Superclod. When I could buy anything I only bought those kits which really appealed to me even if some others were offered at very low prices.

I find I change my mind quite often, I start a project and have ideas for the next already in my head! I'm trying hard to finish each car before I start the next but it isn't easy!

I do have a long list of cars that I would like to own, I'm slowly working through that list and adding more as I go. Some cars I buy I originally had no intention of buying but after seeing other projects I think I'd like to have a go too!

I am a Tamiya enthusiast, Not a collector. I do not buy cars for the sake of having lots of cars...

I only buy the cars that appeal to me because of design or nostalgia.

I look for high tech, high performance and good looks.

I have no time for the regular cheap Tamiya cookie cutter cars that Tamiya puts out.

I wish Tamiya made less but better quality models.

I'd be fortunate if I only had one hobby. I'm currently on a road trip to look at and hopefully buy a vintage ten foot hydroplane.

Some great replies guys, glad to see it's not just me without a plan.

Well, I do have a little wish list, but I wouldn't class myself as a collector, just a few more cool buggies from the past and I'll be happy :)

My favorite way to buy things is in big lots, usually from Craigslist or yard sales. There will be one or two items that I really really want, and the rest is just sort of a bonus, and end up getting sold off to fund other purchases. I rarely keep more than one example of any chassis; if a "parts car" is completed, it's completed to sell, and I just hang on to the best example of that car that I have.

As for a "wish list", I have one, but it changes. My next "big" item is that I'd like to save up and find some old NIB kit to build and run from new. Not even too picky about what it is, as long as it's pre-1990.

Best. Response. Ever.

Sometimes I wonder if the only difference between me and a crazy cat lady is the house doesn't smell as bad lol

I have no plan either. I have a wishlist in my head and a couple of projects in the pipeline and i scan the local 2nd hand-sites almost daily and sometimes ebay. I have above all, alot of patience.

Price is also a determining factor and a little bit a sport for me. All my cars, did not cost more than 50 Euro when initially purchased the only exception being the original Hornet i bought back in the 80's and the Avante 2001 that i got after trading it for a new Wrangler CC-01 which was a present

Also i make it a sport of buying a car, sometimes for one ho-up that i need for another project, and sell the rest of the car again for the same price.

Last but not least, i am trying really hard to keep the amount of cars under control...not easy!

Looking at my current collection of tamiya

I seem to go for the off road cars,

most are 4x4, although for some unknown reason I own 3 Tamiya Lorries  and a Tank :)

I would like a bruiser 3 speed, but the cost is a factor that's stopping me.

Also space to display is a limiting factor

Don't realy have a want list, I just seem to think that's nice, then start googling it and then somehow its gets bought

I blame this site for a lot of my purchases, :D

must Resist the urge to look at build threads

For me, it is often vehicles that I already have that inform my decisions as to what to get next. For example, I have a DT02, and wanted a 4wd equivalent, so I got a DF02. I have a WR01 and wanted something more realistic, so got a CC01, and so forth.

I started out with a re re hotshot which was purchased with the intention of displaying it as a bit of 80s nostalgia. I then found Tamiyaclub and after a bit of reading of other re-releases and those people were willing to get re-released I realised I could possibly own all the cars I wanted as a child.

A list was born, however I feel the skills and enthusiasm shown by the members of this forum are the ones to blame for my original plans going west! The list has grown and I now find myself looking at rc's I never once had an intrest in.

Luckily I haven't got the vintage bug yet although I do own a few vintage decal sets and guide books.

A lot of my purchases are spur of the moment decisions. If I see a buy it now bargain, there's a good chance I'll buy it. Sometimes I wonder why I do it. I have a Wild Willy that I have no real affinity with, but when it came up, I thought it was a good price so hit the button. I've had for years and done nothing with it. I'm thinking of selling it, and I'm not one to sell things.

I don't have a wish list, but if I want it and the price is right, I'll buy it. No rhyme or reason.

First job for me was to buy all of the Tamiya's I wanted as a child. I'd had a good few years away from Tamiya though so up until a month ago I did not know what a Top Force or Dyna Storm were! so there's still a lot of cars I am discovering through reading Tamiyaclub.com and these are going on to my list - other wise known as the VISA card!! :)

It's the voices in my head... ;)

Sort of. Ideas and inspiration are what get me into trouble. There aren't many stock kits that excite me but I'm always looking for ideas, even when I don't realise it!

Then I see something and it starts an odd little chain reaction in my odd little brain and before I know it I've got a plan, a box of parts and no money, again.

Being 100% honest since I built my custom Frog Scorcher nothing has really appealed to me from the recent releases . However with price being a factor i do have a idea to get two for virtually the price of one by buying a Pumpkin Lowrider kit and a LB body set . That way i can build a custom Hot Rod and a Cannonball Run Ambulance

Just one more thing... I like to explore new chassis designs. I recently built an Avante and to me the Egress is just too similar chassis so for now I am passing on that one. I also have a Subaru Brat so will not be pursuing a Frog any time soon. TT-02 and TT-01 are a bit close for comfort, I would prefer to try for a belt driven 4wd in my next on road buy. I will say though that 'Black Special' editions featuring a lot of carbon, aluminium, and fancy bits do over ride my sensibility though so while I prefer to explore one of each chassis family any Black Special is fair game :)

This is a relatively cheap hobby so most of us just buy what we like and ended up with many unbuilt or finish kits. And after so many years a fire sell or has to unload to make room, provided there is still a desire towards the hobby. Most of us can't behave the same way towards a real 1:1, though we would like to, because money is the stopping factor. We all go through this cycle, if we are in it long enough.

Is like the movie , Colors, where Robert Duval tells Sean Penn about a young Bow telling this mature Bull...hey there are a bunch of cows down the hill, lets run down there and do one of them, the old Bow replies, lets walk down and do them all. The key is pace yourself and really think it over if the kit is right, otherwise you will have so may kits and will only make good bragging story.

I'm quite partial to a little eBay browsing and pick up restoration projects so it's whatever works within my budget.

As for new builds I generally go for what looks nice with at least a hint of realism. I mostly drive off road and prefer a scale driving experience. Being able to modify the chassis is always a factor as I do like a bit of RC tinkering.

But I tend to have multiple builds on the go at any one time and I'm always thinking about the next project to start... so sorry to anyone that attempts to follow my build threads :) Occasionally I do finish them.
