How do you decide what's next?

I just buy what I fancy. Same goes for motorbikes. Doesn't make me a "collector" just because I have quite a few. Collectors strive to complete a set of something and I don't understand buying something you don't like just because you don't have one yet.

I've bought a WW2 and a KingCab recently because I really liked them both back in the day but never bought them. There's a couple of others I want in the same way but that'll be it.

I seem to take a liking to something then go a bit mad with it hence the 3 Madcaps - 3 Avante originals 2 BS Avante's etc etc I seem to get doubles/triples of everything because I end either wanting one to bash and one to shelf then decide I want one that's hopped up ...most of my non Avante purchases have bee because I have seen something on TC that has made me do the ohhh that's nice thing, then ebay seems to takeover or I see something on sale here that reminds me of something I have seen/wanted before on TC.

when I do go on the hunt, usually money is a factor unless I get carried away with the old beer n herbal I do tend to make the stupid overpriced purchase just to cut out the waiting !

Once I get hold of that I'm not sure whats next, it will probably be used, vintage and boxed though

Well, I just ordered a Rising Fighter because its really a Super Hornet w/ minor updates and for $79 shipped what's not to like? Just a bit of cheap & cheerful kit building / running.

I also bought a Desert Fielder (stupid name) because I've always liked the ta-02 chassis and I'm just in the mood to build a basher.

That and a credit card were really about all it took to decide what's next. Not much methodology to speak of.

I just keep building what pops into my head. The major problem with that approach is that I can't scratch build models fast enough to keep up with the ideas that surface. Out the 5 scratch built projects I have started, (Steel king tiger, 6x6 truck, 4x4x4 Lunch box, Half track, grapple skidder), only 1 (The lunch box) is properly finished in my mind.

For your own safety I would advise against converting the Dining Room into a floor to ceiling shelving unit filled with Tamiya's whilst the wife is away on Holiday. Could end badly.

I doubt the excuse, "but you said..." will help much either.

It's hard to explain and I have to make a distinction because my chosen for a classical is mostly inspired by the wishes I had in the good old days and by a kind of feeling I sense for a car instead of for another.

Concerning new cars I'm interested in models with uncommon mechanic like FWD (the last "modern" car that I bought is a FF03) and I stay away from "clone of the clone" style models.

For sure I don't waste my money for the "always and everywhere full throttle generation".

I did have to buy a couple of the 1/5 HPI's they are monsters.

Have just about all the vintage I want, just need more time to rebuild them, will always be on the lookout for cool hop ups though, they are my addiction.

This. I just picked up a $20 Frog that I am rebuilding. I have it disassembled and soaking in Simple Green as we speak. I am calling it Project MPF (Multi-Purpose Frog) because I got it as a basher/test racer in order to work on my driving skills. Why you ask? I am going to race my vintage gold pan RC10, of course. My local track does not have a vintage class, but what the hey. It will be a lot of fun and the new cars just don't do it for me. They don't have the personality that the old cars do. All that wacky cab-forward, big-bore, etc, etc makes the cars all look the same. Sure, they drive much better, but I want to race something I like. Even the newer Tamiyas like the TRF201 I have aren't as interesting.

I seem to get a lot on inspiration on here!! I'm an owner of a 1:1 VW Beetle so I tend to lean towards anything related to those. Would love a sand scorcher but if I spent that amount of money I'd be a bit scared of using it. Then I saw a thread on here about the sand hopper hybrid using a Blitzer beetle shell, so now that's on the list.

I also want to build a manta ray based car with a top force flavour.

However top of the list is to do a lunch box in custom colours, but I'm trying to work out if I can just buy the parts individually without it costing me a fortune! Seems silly to buy a kit when I won't be using the wheels, chassis, ESC etc..

Generally it's what floats my boat at that time but they do fit into buying categories.

1. Models I saw/wanted as a kid

2. Custom projects, an idea that I then see if a Tamiya product would fit the bill

3. You see patterns in others build threads which either give you ideas or more over "I want one!" feelings

4. New Re-res which spark off a "it would be rude not to" idea

Example, I have a buggy (well 2 actually) and I have a monster truck, now i'm thinking it would be nice to have a road car. Im thinking about a Fiat 500 as I would really like a 1:1 of these.

The Fiat 500 is a good choice. My father and I raced a pair of them quite successfully. The rounded shape slid past obstacles that boxier shells tended to get hung up on, and the M03 chassis proved to be tough and capable. A Sport Tuned motor provided ample performance - anything much faster was a waste as it shredded the front tyres without making much of an impact on lap times.

I still have mine, although it sits on the shelf for most of the time these days as my local bashing spots need something with a bit more ground clearance. I am looking forward to finding somewhere nice to run it though - it is a great little car!
