XR311 (2000 re-release) Build

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys, let's continue then with step 14

The torsion bar setup
This is also the biggest improvement on the original XR311 / Cheetah design
The old ones were plastic torsion bars which had the tendency to break, so they were replaced by metal ones (part BP-2)
step 14 !!

The parts
step_14_01.jpg
and the result
Didn't put tension on it yet, otherwise the legs will be in the upper position

And let's get on with 15 right away, the rear suspension

step_15_small.jpg
Same set of parts as step 14
step_14_01.jpg
And put together, it almost doesn't fit anymore on my A3 cutting mat.....

That suspension certainly is a characteristic huh. When you said torsion bar it immediately made me think of how they work on 1:1 cars, with independent bars running parallel with the axle and independent dampers. I have owned 4 different Peugeot 306s over time (for my sins) and replacing the rear torsion beam is a job I hope never to have to repeat!

I've always wondered if the same setup could be replicated on an RC and whether it would work. Given the skill I'd love to redevelop the rear end of my FF02 to mimic a torsion beam...

Yup, indeed, the suspension system is very typical for the XR311 / Cheetah design..... and I must say it works quite well :)

anyway, lets get on with step 16

Step 16, the tyres
step_16_small.jpg
the parts (this sprue times 2 of course)
step_16_01.jpg
and the tyres (total x 4 of course) The rims have been painted in the correct colour
takes some effort to put the middle piece in the tyre
step_16_02.jpg
and the endresult.... the rims don't have to be glued, because they will be held together by the screws

And step 17

The chassis is nearing its completion
step_17_small.jpg
parts for fixing the chassis later on
step_17_01.jpg
and the tyres with 5 screws each
step_17_02.jpg
and completed (upper view)
step_17_03.jpg
sort of sideview

Glad to see that it is read :)

So lets go on with step 18, the front underguard.... something that I will definately need with my driving skills ;)

step_18_small.jpg
The parts
step_18_01.jpg
and mounted
Like I said, I don't find it very appealing on the model, but i will mount it, to minimize damage when driving it

Agree, bumper looks almost like an afterthought, but probably a necessary evil!

How will you decorate the body? Boxart?

It looks very long. What scale would you say it is? (I have seen it advertised as both 1/10 and 1/12.)

The scale of the Vehicle is 1/12 !, and yes, I will refer to the boxart... (just the way I ike it :) )

Lets get on with step 19

Step 19 ???? yeah, well not reaaly a build step
More like testing th transmitterand receiver.....
I will be using an Acoms transmitter, with a Tamiya TRU-02 receiver, a TEU-104BK Speed controller, and for now a Futaba S3003 servo
step_19_small.jpg
And the parts.... thank God it all works fine :)

Finaly, lets get on with the body :)

Step 24 (It's about time isn't it
step_24_small.jpg
here the body parts
step_24_01.jpg
step_24_02.jpg
and the small parts that need to be mounted... you have to cut the wire mesh yourself
step_24_03.jpg
Mounted and painted

And lets get on with 25

step_25_small.jpg
The parts
Jerry cans
step_25_01.jpg
The trunk
step_25_02.jpg
rear bumper
step_25_03.jpg
front bumper
step_25_04.jpg
Perhaps you can see that the racks are mounted in a way that they are not straight.... I didn't think this was very nice
step_25_05.jpg
So I cut the rack.
Mounted this loose
step_25_06.jpg
And afterwards munted this in an angle of 90 degrees !
Looks a lot better to be honest
step_25_07.jpg
And the end result.
I also took the liberty of changing the pins on one Jerry can,
Otherwise they are mounted in the same way, I like the look of this better
Also the hook is not mounted yet... I'm still looking for a small chain for this.....
Unfortunately no hobby store in the neighbourhood....
Any chance anyone got something lying around ????

What an odd chassis. I really want to know how this runs. It is a seriously cool car. What about scale? As I recal it is on the small side. Do you have a more mainstream car to put along side it for comparison? I really kind of want one now....

Really like your step-by-step details. Makes me want one of these! Thanks for all the time and detail you put into documenting this.

Since my experience with Tamiya (and other) RC models is pretty limited at this point, this is an awesome way to see what other fish are out in the Tamiya pond and how they work! :)

Scale is 1/12.... and unfortunately this is my only ine... so nothing to compare it to....

Anyway time to get on with the show :)
Here step 26
step_26_small.jpg
Not more then putting the parts of the previous steps together.
As you can see I put the right Jerry Can the other way around... just liked it more this way
