Has anyone fitted a lunchbox body on to a more capable chassis? My son is obsessed now and I have promised him one if he learns to drive the Hornet properly.

Thought the WR-02 might be a good option

Do you know what sort of "capable" you're after in a chassis? If it's durability and wheelie good fun, the Lunchbox chassis is fine. 3rd shock mod makes it a bit more controllable and stops it rattling but isn't essential.

WR-02 is newer and I guess technically superior but I can't imagine you're gaining a huge amount by switching chassis - someone please correct me if I'm wrong! :)

Interestingly the Traxxas 1/16 E-Revo has the same wheelbase as the Pumpkin shell, and I've got a lexan Pumpkin replica ready to go on mine. With LiPo power the brushless mini-revo has the torque to wheelie from a standstill, but goes faster and handles much better than a Lunchbox or WR-02 ever will. Probably maximum overkill for a youngster, though (it's too fast for me unless I've got a big open area).

I always felt the Lunchbox / Pumpkin / any other wheelie vehicle is a bit of a one-trick pony, but how much fun you can have with it really depends on how much you love the trick.

I want a good driver. The wheelie thing is not for me but some mud plugging and real off road stuff with the boy would be nice, I think 4WD is a must

How about the Maverick Scout ? A lunchbox Crawler would be kind of cool . Mud plugging - no problem as its waterproof and off road it would go just about anywhere .

I'm really tempted to grab a Maverick Scout for another scaler project. Not sure how much fun it would be as a basher as scalers tend to be slow, but there again, I've never seen one in action.

The Lunchbox shell is a lot smaller than most Tamiya chassis, IMO it will look daft on most 1:10 4x4 trucks. There may be some 1:12 or 1:16 trucks from other manufacturers that will fit nicely underneath it - maybe someone else can advise about those :)

Bothe the lunchbox and midnight pumpkin body's look good on aTLT chassis

Both of them would look cool. Bit out of the price range for the boy though.

Just seen the price of a LB shell on its own!! might as well get the whole kit for that much

Thanks for the advice, I had not considered it was quite a small shell

Isn't there a parma Lunchie shell? That'd be far cheaper than a Tamiya hard plastic shell + chrome bits + windows if you find the right chassis (although I gotta say, my Lunchie, with the usual mods, is such a fun car to drive as it is)

I think a LB shell on a WR02 is gonna look very weird with the short wheelbase! I have both at home so can take a mock up pic later if you really want to go that route.

I think the LB would look better on a WT01 which would give you much better handling and the ability to go 4x4 or even 4WS easily.

The Maverick Scout is a great little package and about the best value for money in its class. Like any rock crawler it ain't fast as standard, but you could always change the gearing with a higher toothed pinion and a hotter motor.

This isn't a bad shout...wheel base would be long tho wouldn't it? If you want this mocked up and photographed, I have a lunchie and a 4WD modified WT01 (or does that make it a WR01?) I can snap.

That would be great. I happen to have a WT01 in stock waiting to be built. I could maybe sell the BRAT shell and kill 2 birds with one stone here

The WT01 is 1/10 scale, and quite a big 1/10 scale at that. The Lunchbox is a little 1/12 scale thing. It might give the appearance of a really monstrous rig with the little shell perched on the huge (by comparison) chassis, but it might also look a bit odd - I am not sure if the shell is big enough to hide the ends of the chassis frames. It would be interesting to see the mock-up.

Although if you want a Lunchbox on a more capable chassis, how about keeping it on the Lunchbox chassis and modding it to be more capable? There are some nice threads on here about very capable Lunchboxes with 5th shock mods, double-wishbone front suspension, braced chassis tubs, aftermarket shocks and power systems, etc. And if it is for your kid, getting him involved in researching and carrying out the mods might be both fun and educational.

I do have a LB chassis I got with a set of arms. I have been thinking about getting another DT-01 and hanging that Axel off the back and using the arms up front with some better shocks. You are right this could be a fun learning thing but I do not share well with others so my poor boy might not get the best out of it

Here's the body balanced on the chassis. I have some meaty shock towers on my truck which appear to be at the limits of the Lunchie body

And here's the chassis' next to each other for comparison. It's quite a difference in the wheel base

Many thanks. That just looks ridiculous so back to plan Z.

The front and rear of a dt-02 are independent and just bolt to a centre tub so I might be able to make a middle section to connect them or just modify the heck out of the standard Lunchy like so many others have to great effect.

New EBay search added for a tatty (read cheap) LB or LB body.

i fitted FX-10 double wishbone and it has really transformed lunchbox to great handler, but it is still heavy top. it is very worth the money to do upgrade.

^ One day I will build something with that much greatness....

And yeah, Nobbi, I think modding a lunchbox chassis is the way to go...it's a really nice little project with just the right amount of simple fabrication.

My brain says yes but my skill level maybe lacking.

What a fantastic bit of kit

It's about 90% unmodified Tamiya parts, so what you've got to do is send the pictures to Mr T and say can you make this please, but swap out the home made ally bits for injected moulded plastic to make it affordable.
