Scratch Built RC Holden HX Overlander Panel Van

Recommended Posts

Small update ... Didn't get all the molds done last night, so completed them tonight...and made some castings....

image.jpg1_zpsnhdnbdkt.jpg

Fresh from the molds...lotsa flash...

image.jpg2_zpswzrta4xi.jpg

image.jpg3_zpsngygk1ty.jpg

The circular piece on the right is the remainder of the mix from the bottom of the cup...notice how greasy the flares look? That's the mold release agent still on them, will need to clean it off before putting them anywhere on the body or the paint is gonna be an issue...cascade dishwashing gel is recommended by the supplier of the silicone kit to clean off the release agent, and then it should look like the circular piece..

image.jpg4_zpsco8jctmz.jpg

Trimmed the flash off...

image.jpg5_zpsmtpodfwn.jpg

Very flexible....

image.jpg6_zpsl0c5ytf5.jpg

I washed them off using regular dish washing liquid (Palmolive) but will pick up the cascade tomorrow and clean them properly before putting on the body...

image.jpg7_zps6xotljy0.jpg

They aren't 100% perfect, got some tiny dimples on the flange area where there were some air bubbles, but I'm pretty happy with them...

So now it's back to body work tomorrow night...!

Hey guys....completely off topic....built these 1/10 Escort Mk2 parts for a guy who saw mine, main difference is he asked to incorporate light buckets in the front bumper like the 1:1 and also to build light buckets and lenses for the rear of the car.

So if you guys don't mind giving me some feedback as to what you think a fair price will be, as I haven't done anything like this before as an order for someone. Any help will be appreciated.

Basically, it's the front and rear bumpers, with light buckets and lenses incorporated into the front bumpers, rear wing, rear light buckets with lenses.

they look good, and pricing is hard is always hard for custom stuff. I would start with cost of materials plus your time and base your hourly rate on either your current pay check or a hourly rate for specialist service like plumbing.

It also depends on who you did if for. I do work for tv shows and ads from time to time and basically charge as much as I can get away with! But in saying that, I do offer them value for money, as what I provide is hard for them to get and very specialised.

On the other side, I've also done small jobs for friends and try to just cover the basics cost wise as I have no interest in profiting from friends.

Another thing to consider is how much more work like this you want to do. If you want to get more work like this, definitely work out an hourly rate pus cost of materials (and in that cost you must also account for wastage and I would add on 10 to 20% to cover the odd stuff up, time getting materials etc). Much like a business would do.

Don't under value your skill either (as I have seen many artists do), but at the end of the day what do you need to charge to make it worthwhile for you to do it, and if you were buying it yourself, how much would you be willing to pay.

my 2 cents anyway, but keep posting updates please!

Hey thanks for the input yogi-bear ! You have raised some very good points that I hadn't considered....thanks for that...I think looking at it from this perspective will help me to work out a price! Sweet!

Hoping to have some updates later tonight or tomorrow night at the latest...! Really want to wrap up the work on the interior and get busy on the exterior! Gonna try to get the panels that go behind the buckets / doors done tonight as well as try to dial in the dashboard with mounting points and figure how I'm mounting the steering column, also add the details like indicator lever and ignition switch.

Charging is always hard for bespoke hobby stuff because often the hours involved x minimum wage make bits cost far more than anyone would ever pay.

At the end of the day things are only worth what people will pay and often that will insult the work and skill put in.

thats very true, and one reason why I haven't bothered trying to sell my own stickers. And also true that most people don't want to pay a lot either and quite often don't really understand how much time goes into making a one off item. But there is a market for bespoke items, its just a matter if you can carve yourself out a niche in it that makes you money.

Yes, you guys are so right about this! In hindsight, I should have quoted a price before I started...! Lesson learned! Initially it was just the plain bumpers and wing, then he asked if i could try to incorporate the lights and lenses etc...and well...I like building stuff and trying to replicate the 1:1 pieces as best as I can...so figured I would give it a shot...turned out pretty nice...

On the positive side, if he doesn't want them, I have another mk2 body stashed away, that I could always use them on...

Thanks again guys!

It's a hobby & you enjoy doing what you do ( by that sound of it ) .

Ok , your never going to be a millionaire out of it :D . BUT !!

You enjoy building & making things , So if you can make a few bucks

out of it , why not . The time don't matter in some ways . As long as you get

the cost of materials back & some money for time it's all good . As i'm sure your going

to keep building stuff ( for your self ) & if you can make some money to help you with that . WHY NOT!! .

Some times , this is the way to look at things . The money that you get after cost of materials , you can

use for extra materials or get something that you can use to help you build things of sort . Like body reamer

, drill press ?? , just throwing things out there ......

Because hobbies are just hobbies & we won't make money out of it . As much as we would like to :D ..

+ keep up with the Great work you do . I enjoy looking at it & the updates . Your a very talented man ...

Another small update...:o

Completed the steering column... Figured how I'm mounting the steering wheel column to the instrument panel...its removeable, so the pieces can be painted separately then assembled.

Also figured out how I'm mounting the dashboard to the body...I used magnets, so it snaps in pretty securely. I also tweaked the area where the dashboard sits, so it all looks kinda neat.still need to figure how I'm attaching the instrument panel to the dash...

Tomorrow I will try to get the center console in its proper position, then I will like to start the front indicator detail on the nose panel, as well as try to get the rear bumpers sorted......

This is on another level, the detail is incredible, you have an amazing talent, and its very inspiring too. I recently found an old Tamiya 1/12th static kit of a Datsun 240Z that needs some restoration, so I'll be breaking out the styrene for that, though I know it's never going to be as good as yours....

Hey thanks lupogtiboy!

That 240Z sounds awesome! Post up some pics will ya? Styrene is very forgiving, this is my first scratch built body and a lot of the pieces I have posted up were not the first go...

Been a real busy week at work setting up stuff...kinda settled down now...so started to do some more stuff...

image.jpg1_zpsucbwqjt9.jpg

Actually was wondering how to attach the hood relief piece to the hood, then I thought ' why not try casting it in silicone?'

image.jpg1_zpsswxi6kih.jpg

When I get home from work tonight I'll mix up some more silicone and make a cast and see how it turns out...:D

Mixed up a batch of silicone mix and tossed in some black pigment and some white....got it a nice dirty looking grey...lol!

Straight from the mold...

image.jpg1_zpsvwlu9mwu.jpg

Next to an x-acto blade to give an idea of the thickness....

image.jpg2_zpsony6dmfx.jpg

All trimmed up...gonna clean it off with some cascade shortly....!

image.jpg3_zps7nzuut76.jpg

Couldn't wait to see it, so dug out the Sandman and tried it on for size! Needs a bit more trimming around the magnet area so the ends pull in some more, so the hood closes properly...heh...! Starting to like this moldy business !

Hey guys...not much of an update....more like another 2 steps back....

Just found out that it's not gonna be easy to glue the silicone flares to styrene without some kind of chemical activator...not something I want to do after I paint the body, as I want the flares to be removable. 3M has a special double sided tape that bonds on one side to silicone and the other side to regular materials (plastics, metals etc). One roll costs around 142.00

So decided that I'm gonna re-cast the flares but this time with some magnets imbedded in the casting, then I could mount magnets on the inside of the fenders, so the flares can be removable even after painting...well that's the plan at this point for the flares... Won't happen till I get back home in September though, as I didn't bring the molds with me...

Did a mock up using some magnets....flares look pretty good on the body...

Some pics, watcha think? Will try to take some clearer pics in the daylight tomorrow ...

The roof is done............NOT !!

Lol...hope I'm doing this the correct way...ha! Sprayed it with some primer then used used the green as a guide coat....was the only TS paint that I had at moment...you can pretty much see some of the low spots as well as where the single part putty shrunk on the front slope....

Used a flat piece of balsa with some sand paper glued on to try to find the low spots...this is what I ended up with...
