This build has an accidental and problematic birth.

I ordered two DT-01 chassis from a place in Germany. Turns out they did not have two left so they sent me a DT-02.

Sounds great but the C spur parts and the C parts bag were missing.

They were very good and sent the bits but while I was waiting I sort of ordered a few Hop-ups

No body as of yet, I might try a few things out. I thought about lobbing big wheels on and trying for a hi tech Madbull but I have heard this can cause motor and ESC issues.

Started out as a Street Rover with no body or wheels

Spent a lot of time ticking off every part to make sure it was all there

Body tub is nice on these, feels much nicer than the DT-01 one

SAM_1385_zpsccc09514.jpg

Couple of extras :-)

SAM_1423_zps8516455d.jpg

Ball Diff - no idea about these but some limited slip seems to be needed on most of these 2WD's

SAM_1425_zps34bb885a.jpg

Following instructions, for once in my life

SAM_1426_zps47eb6511.jpg

First issue - standard drive shafts will not fit the cups from the ball diff

SAM_1427_zps48776800.jpg

Balls greased and in the holes

SAM_1428_zps41274bd1.jpg

Center shaft spring thing all built

SAM_1431_zpsa0209c6b.jpg

All build up

SAM_1432_zps2cee689b.jpg

I have adjusted it all the way up. It did not feel that tight to me but maybe it does not need to be to limit slip. I will run it in for a bit and then adjust if needed.

I have over greased my first couple of builds so I though I would try something else. A couple of people have reported minimal wear not using lube so I thought I would try a bit of wax. If it good enough for a 160MPH bike chain then it should be ok on a little car

SAM_1433_zps1c7953b6.jpg

100% sure these are a total waste of money but £3 so why not

SAM_1434_zpsbd355a03.jpg

Bearings throughout

SAM_1436_zps278d03f0.jpg

Slightly tuned motor

SAM_1437_zpsee06e620.jpg

This confused me

SAM_1439_zpsa9993fc1.jpg

Worked out this is supposed to be for a smaller motor

Fitted

Built up ready to go

SAM_1443_zpsa7791bd3.jpg

Steering arms measured

SAM_1445_zps9c8e05ef.jpg

Front just bolts to the tub as one unit

SAM_1446_zps700a154a.jpg

As does the back

SAM_1447_zps19515522.jpg

SAM_1448_zps750a1239.jpg

Found instructions for fitting for motor and got paranoid so it took the cover off and adjusted the pinion a bit

SAM_1449_zps5ee7f47b.jpg

Forgot I had these

SAM_1450_zps6db80d18.jpg

Took ages building them up and getting the correct lengths. Not sure what I was thinking with this photo

SAM_1452_zpsfe3bf694.jpg

I built the shocking standard "dampers" just to hold the front end up while I build. I had some help from a friend who thinks she is getting a new box

SAM_1454_zpse4285557.jpg

That is it until the drive shafts turn up

The Water Displacement 40 is not a lube but a cherosene based anti humidity product.
It was used to keep water free the nuclear missile launch tubes.
It is a terrible lube for gears, they will shoot it out your gearbox after the first 20 seconds of use. It will evaporate quickly and the gears will rotate without lubrication and you will worn out them.
At the end it is cherosene and your plastics will break in few time.
I strongly suggest you to re-open the gearbox and wash it with dish soap, then you will lube the gears with the ceramic grease that is a light grease made for this purpose that will not leave the gears without lubrication and will not ruin the plastics.

Max

I had the same reaction to the WD40 but after a second look that appears to be a chain wax lube not your normal WD40. I've had good results with a Castrol chain wax on plastic and metal parts so as long as it's safe for use with O ring chains you should be fine.

I'd agree though keep the usual WD40 away from plastics and rubber seals as it'll perish much quicker.

You probably already know but you'll just need the metal dog bones and drive cups that are in a lot of kits like the TL01B, WT01 (Blackfoot 3, Mudblaster 2) to fit the ball diff drives.

Yes WD40 is not a lubricant, great for polishing plastic bodywork though. This is a new product, I got a little can free at the bike show last year. It sprays on nice and leaves a waxy film, it is also designed not to fling off so might stay on a bit longer than ceramic grease.

I had some dampers on order for this build but I ordered a DT-03 and it came with CVAs so they are going on this and the shiny ones will go on the DT-03

Banzai strikes again. I was browsing for some other bits and ended up with a few Hop-Ups for my "budget" basher, this hobby is addictive.

Well today was my first bash.

I covered the base in plastic to give it a bit of protection.

SAM_1687_zpsj2vz9wqx.jpg

SAM_1688_zpswpkfzwgj.jpg

Needed to make a couple of changes to fit a Li-Po pack. Hard to remove a couple of bits from the bottom of the battery tray and add a hole for the balance cable

SAM_1689_zpsxwhqqftr.jpg

I cannot believe how fast this thing is and how well it handles, it is totally beyond my skill level. After an hour of hitting everything in sight the protection did its job but now looks a bit tatty

Nice build nobbi. It moves pretty quickly with that torque tuned. What colour scheme have you got planned for the shell?

Posted

Not sure about the shell yet, I have an air brush and a few pots so it might end up crazy. Might sound silly but I do not want to do a great job and then not want to run it. The decal sheet I have not got includes black window stickers that go on the outside, I might replicate them in the carbon fibre sticker sheet and then just spray out the inside in one colour.

I need to look at the carbon shock mounts as well, they look great but at the first things to touch down when it goes base over apex.

I also need to work on my driving and filming skills :-)

Posted

I know exactly what you mean. If it's too good you'll just end up looking at it and not running it incase you spoil it. If it's not 'too' fancy you don't tend to care as much. I always liked avante blue (don't know the paint code).

I'd like to do some filming of mine. There's some great youtubes vids in slow motion with music added. Just need to find a cheap/free editing software on android if it exists. You could make some nice memories to look back on and show others.

Posted

i run all mine - even with the custom body's i spent many hours crafting and painting . Some will say i'am mad to do that but i see it this way . I built those one off body's - and if i can do it once i can do it again if i need to replace one . Shelf queens are just not my thing .

Enjoyable read. You take a LOT of pics on your build threads, and I mean that in a good way :)

It looks like it really shifts, I like the jump vids :)

My head is swelling now....

I have not posted all I take. I restore old bikes as another hobby so have a dedicated garage camera and take pics every time I do anything, it is critical to remembering how to get things back together when you go back in there after a long winter.

I am very new to RC stuff so I am still loving it all and on a voyage of discovery. I love all the build threads on here and can spend a long time looking through them but a picture is as good as 100 words when it comes to bits others might not have seen before

Posted

Loving the honesty during the build - really enjoyed it - nice one!  B)

I do find it hard to keep it clean for the family audience some times......

Posted

Well the weather was a bit better today so I bite the bullet and decided to do some painting. The price of Tamiya spray makes me cry so I got a few pots of the brush on stuff and an ebay air brush.

£6 well spent I hope

SAM_1771_zpskzctvrxm.jpg

I also wanted to try out a few things so I ordered this

SAM_1772_zpsnwncfm5m.jpg

Added it to this

SAM_1774_zps6vb1ugca.jpg

With a good glug of this

SAM_1777_zpsa0apk2tc.jpg

It seemed to go on ok, needed 50 psi with the taps open full on the gun but it went on

Not looking to bad

SAM_1775_zpsvzhax3s7.jpg

until it held it up to the light

SAM_1776_zpsfqtkskk3.jpg

For round 2 I added a bit of water ( not distilled, I have a bottle at work but non here)

SAM_1778_zpsswu5c516.jpg

SAM_1779_zpsglshwrwe.jpg

It went on a lot better but there was some blooming in places, guessing it did not like water and wanted more alcohol (just like me)

I let it dry and peeled of the protective layer

SAM_1781_zps0zvtma4z.jpg

SAM_1782_zpsxk6zzxvl.jpg

I am one happy bunny so far. The wing did not go well, the paint just ran off and did not stick. I think an initial dry coat is a good plan to get it to stick

Going to cut window decals out of carbon fiber sticky so if anyone has a fresh set of Sand Viper decals they would like to scan me as a template I would be eternally grateful

Looks good from here! Don't be too critical of yourself - you're only ever going to be at least 5 ft away from it whilst it's racing around at ankle-height (unless you are a dwarf I suppose).

I finished my 'Basher DT02' today as well, albeit sans electronics (needs receiver and servo installing).

Can't wait to take it out into the garden for a thrashing. Really want to invest in those Carson wheels too...

The Carsons grip well as well as looking good. Tamico do them cheap but you need to order three sets to offset postage costs.

Posted

Well it was looking great but went for a bash today and after a couple of flips all the paint came off the wing

To be honest it had turned totally inside out at one point so I am not surprised

Need a plan B

I think the car looks great without decals tbh mate. Also if it were mine I might try to black out the windows rather than cutting the body, If it looks rubbish you can always cut it later anyway :)

Black window decals are on my list of things to do. need to get it clean again first............

How about one of these in place of the stock wing?

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/schumacher-wing-talon-off-road-carbon-look/rc-car-products/372078

It is made of polycarbonate with a durable carbon effect finish, and provides serious downforce. Furthermore, it would tie in well visually with all the other carbon on the car.
