Momos,

What turns are the HPI Firebolt motors?

The only thing that I would do for sure is go to a steel pinion gear instead of the stock aluminium gear..

Its been a while since I've run my Clod, but IIRC it uses a 13 tooth pinion as standard, but you can confirm this..

Here is a 13 tooth 32dp pinions to suit a 3.175mm shaft.. Just remember that you will need 2.. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__36085__13T_3_17mm_32_Pitch_Hardened_Steel_Pinion_Gear.html

ALSO, just so that you know, The stock Tamiya clod gears are 0.8 Module.. The 32dp gears that I suggested are imperial, but they are that close in gear pitch and size to 0.8 module, they can be interchanged..

You may want to consider using a slightly smaller pinion gear if your running 15 turn motors.. If it will fit, try an 11 tooth pinion maybe..

What ESC are you planning to use with twin 15 turn motors?

Posted

The rule of thumb is when you are connecting 2 motors in parallel off a single ESC, then the ESC will see the motors as being half the turns of the motors being used..

So in your case with two 15 turn motors you will need an ESC that will safely run a 7 turn motor...

What you will need to be shopping for is a no motor limit ESC, and finding a no limit ESC with reverse (assuming that you will want reverse), the shopping list will be VERY short..

You may be better off looking to buy two ESC's with a 15 turn or less motor limit, and have one ESC per motor..

There are a few different ways that you can connect 2 ESC's to run off a single battery in twin motor vehicles like the Clod..

The easiest way is to use a servo Y lead which will allow your receiver to control 2 ESC's (or servos) off one channel output on the receiver... You can use this same method to run two servos off one channel so you can have four wheel steering.... When using a Y lead you will need to remove the red wire from ONE of the ESC's so the BEC's don't fight each other..

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__9692__Futaba_Y_Servo_Lead_15cm_Length_5pcs_bag_.html

You will also need to connect the input leads from both ESCs to a single plug so you can connect them to a single battery.. You can do this by soldering the 2 red/positive wires together, and the 2 black/negative wires together and then soldering them to the positive and negative terminals of the male battery connectors that you use..

Alternatively you may choose to make (or buy) a Y lead that will allow you to connect 2 ESC's to a single battery..

I would also recommend taking the opportunity to upgrade your battery connectors from the stock Tamiya ones to something better.. Deans or T connectors are popular, as are Traxxas connectors and HobbyKing XT style connectors..

As for ESC's, A lot of forum members have been using the HobbyWING (not HobbyKing) 60A brushed ESC's with good results..

I am not going to run 4 wheel steer just front steer will this make a difference to what esc I buy the esc I had on it when I got it I think has the y connectors on it but it was set up as one esc running the 2 stock silver cans I will find out what it is and post it up

The esc that was on the clod when I got it is a gws navigator f112r56 there was only one running two motors silver cans would this esc be ok to run the 15t firebolts with a 5300 mimh battery

No you misunderstand... Please re-read my last post..

Yes, on your old GWS ESC, there will be a Y lead of some type on the OUTPUT or motor side of the ESC.. This will NOT be required if you plan to run 2 ESC's as there will be 1 ESC connected to each motor..

The Y lead I spoke of allows you to connect 2 ESC's or servos to 1 output channel on your receiver..

Obviously, if you plan to run 2 ESC's and use only 1 battery, then you will need to find a way to connect the 2 ESC's to the one battery, as 2 male ESC plugs will NOT fit into 1 battery plug..

As for the GWS ESC's ability to run 2 x 15 turn motors, well that is anyone's guess.. The only info I could find on that ESC is that it appeared to be designed for BOATS...

For boats typical lol so if I run 2 esc I can run 2 battery's would this be the easier way of doing it once again am sorry I this is all new to me but I really do appreciate the imput

I am thinking about buying the traxxas evx2 am I on the right lines with this esc will this work well with the twin hpi firebolt motors

For Clod Buster - keep it simple, run one esc to both motors, (There are esc's that can handle those 15 turns).

Soldering will be required.

Run one lipo battery.

I use the Tekin FXR-Pro esc in both of mine. Handles 2s and 3s lipo batteries.

With 3s you don't need two batteries and 2s is quick enough.

Good luck.

Ok now am confused what is 2s and 3s batteries and what do I need to solder this is all very technical stuff lol

2s lipo battery is 7.4 volts of power to the motors

3s lipo battery is 11.1 volts of power to the motors

You need to get a battery:

or

Charger:

For soldering you need a soldering station:

Or go with an ESC that comes wired for two motors already.

Is the traxxas evx2 not wired for 2 motors it's quite an expensive unit tho can I run lipo batteries with it there is that many esc out there I have no idea need to order one soon my other bits should be here this week

Am looking for an esc I can use straight out of box that has connections for 2 motors and 1 or 2 batteries if someone could tell me a good esc that can run 2 hpi 15t firebolt motors that's the one I will order lol also will I get more speed and run time out of 2 5300 nimh batteries or 1 3s lipo once again sorry for been a bit slow with this it's a bit confusing

Get this esc:

https://traxxas.com/products/parts/escs/3019Revx2lvd

Use one lipo battery, they are lighter than nimh.

Start with a 2s and if you want more speed than get a 3s.

You may need this adapter to use one battery (it just plugs into one battery plug allowing use of one battery):

https://traxxas.com/products/parts/3983

If you want long runtime make sure the battery has a high mah rating. For example 5800 mah will run longer than 3000 mah.
