Ice racing looks fun! Loved the spiked tyres you made kontemax. Especially on my favourite buggy ever, the avante.

I was inspired by the metal-spike tires kontemax made, but never found enough screws!

I never did full-out organized ice racing, but went bashing once on an uncleared outdoor RC car track in the middle of winter. That was covered in frozen snow that may as well have been ice for its unyielding composition:

Not a good day, since the freshly-rebuilt shocks burst and the entire car was generally in bad shape by the end...

Here in Canada, though, where it snows for a lot of the time ( :P), winter driving has become something of a pastime of mine. I have never been able to find good ice because it is true that hockey players use all the good patches! Medium-density snow has become the preferred surface as a result for a decent lack of grip and better availability; the surface is also better for cars without aggressively-textured tires. My favourite cars to drive in snow/slush are the Lancia Rally and the Striker:

I found the Striker particularly suitable for winter driving due to its enclosed chassis, and bad suspension geometry becomes less pronounced on a surface where a lot of time is spent sliding anyways!

That being said, I do remember taking the Lancia out on a patch of ice once...

I remember driving R/C cars on frozen lakes in the mid 90s in Denmark. For this task, the Monster Beetle and Hornet had been equipped with pushpins that were poked through and glued from the inside of the tires. Mad fun. But watch your hands, better wear gloves.
