Hi Guys,

I am about to receive a vintage futaba wheel radio - my question is "will an esc" work with this? Are there any issues?

Also, how do these wheel radio's work for fun backyard running around?

Thanks,

Sparky [:)]

Not sure on compatibility - dont think it should be an issue, but more dependant on the frequency (40 or 27?) and the fact you need a receiver to match. If you use a modern (ish) receiver with BEC, dont think you should have an issue with an ESC (others on this group can help better)

I really wanted to respond to the question of using a wheel. I'm back into the sport after long gap, and as a kid only used sticks.

Sourced a 40 wheel transmitter recently and fitted the receiver to my buggy - I personally like it a lot, and find the steering a lot more precise. Think most people will say - try it and see - you might hate it. I like it on both long open runs, and tight circuits. Saying that , I still like sticks, and have no plans to change all my gear over. Does that make me tranbidextrous?[:D]

One thing to note - most wheel trans are built in my opinion for right handers. My friend who is left handed had a go and couldnt get to grips with it at all.

There should be no ELECTRONIC compatibility problems with ESC's of any age with any radio gear built since the early 70's. I have some Futaba Medalion sets (77ish) which I ran quite happily with ESC's then and with 90's ESC's much more recently.

The only problems you may encounter will be the plugs etc.

The only concern with early wheel radios is with the ergonomics which were pretty dire!! Thats why modern ones look so different.

Some of the newer top line race esc's will not give full power unless they are used with a digital handset that you can set throttle at 150%.

That statement is a bit overkill for what you have in mind and I would think most sub £100 controls would be ok, especially if they have reverse facility.
