The not so usual Hotshot project

Recommended Posts

Hi Fellas!

I am working on a vintage Hotshot project that is ongoing since some month now. It all started with an idea some years ago but I did not dare to undertake it. It is a very special build and have not been done before I belief. At last I could not find evidence of another build like that.

Ok. So some months ago in early 2014 I started to collect new original release Hotshot parts one by one. I bought almost a complete Hotshot in parts until I could start to build the pieces together. Again it is an all original vintage build. I pretty much enjoyed building an original Hotshot for the very first time. (So far I just restored Hotshots) It's a great feeling btw.

Then I had a halt for some time because special parts had to be made and I did not had the right tools to make them. So I baught me an used Proxxon mini lathe.

20946761uh.jpg

This was the part that inspired me and which gave me the initial idea of what the part should look like (partially and basic shape).

20946786gx.jpg

As the lathe came in and after some basic turning tests (it is the first time ever I use a lathe) I bought a raw aluminum rod and cut it into right lenght.

20946765fw.jpg

After lots of turning and two and a half hour later the first prototype with the basic shape I needed was finished.

20946819vk.jpg

So I spent more than a week every evening sitting at the lathe and turning aluminum.

First raw turned part, waiting five other to be done...

Turning....

...more turning...

...turning again...

20946844td.jpg

...aso...
20946845jy.jpg

Finally the basic turning job was done. Here is the lineup from left to right.

Idea, prototype, 6x basic raw shaped parts.

20946865fe.jpg

Now the center bore job was done. The parts need a hole.

20946919yz.jpg

20946920vo.jpg

After the holes were drilled, the parts were fine turned to the hundredth mm and tapered. Still not 100% finished but basically finished. At last I can start work with them.

20946989tr.jpg

You may ask yourself, what the heck! What has this to do with Tamiya?! Well, until now no Tamiya part were used, not a single part of a Hotshot... Ok, so here it starts with Tamiya....

You can't imagine how many sleepless nights I had. How often I agonised about how to realise my project... until I found what I was looking for. Immediate I hit the bin and some weeks later the postman brought the eagerly awaited parts.

20947115cw.jpg

The build began and soon I had them all assembled.

20947118qp.jpg

Ready for the next step they are lined up waiting.

20947136ye.jpg

Those vintage Hotshot enthusiasts among us perhaps already guess what I am building. Anyway, here are some teaser shots of what will come soon.

20947247tq.jpg

20947246ge.jpg

20947245af.jpg

Hope you enjoyed the first part of my build that I kept secret for so many months. (was not alway easy though)

Re-enacting the dynamic display of the original Hotshot promotional video? The yellow spots and sections look like roll-cage cuts, and I think I see an open front gearbox...

The 2-minute version was a favourite of mine; the music and imagery inspired me to take an interesting turn with the creative writing I do in my spare time. I essentially created a character who adopts a persona when playing sports; this persona is based on the perceived brashness of the Hotshot!

Hotshot monster truck, reduction boxes at each corner and clod wheels....?

Other than that my eyes hurt lol

You're building something do with a Hotshot and gearboxes, and also a lot of suspense.

Well done on the lathe stuff though - it looks great!! :)

Oh I hope this....it would be an amazingly pointless project, but oh so cool to stare at for hours :-)

You nutter.

Will be quite cool if you can pull it off. I guess Tamiya did it in an R&D lab in the 80's so it's not impossible.

Given that TamTom has a penchant for great displays, I am certain this is what he plans to do! It would make for a unique and attractive exhibit, to be sure...

... and I am not even a vintage Hotshot enthusiast. But a fan, perhaps!

Hi!

Garstens hit the nail on the head. :)

I am re-enacting the dynamic display of the original Hotshot promotional video. I don't know how often I have been watching this video and

drooling over the keyboard.

Here are better pictures of the current state. The gearboxes are mounted on an upper chassis to level out the right sitting hight and for final positioning of the stands. Still have to adjust the hight a little..

Here I am trying to find right hight-setup. Fortunately I had enough solid links here. After measuring I have ordered the final solid links for correct hight.

The four gear boxes will do the suspension movements just like in the promo video.

We need a "Like this a lot!" button! Pictures are good and all, but have to have a video for this :-)

Little update.

Got in the 6x6mm square brass rods these days. So I started to make the brass mounting blocks. The two on the left have got their final shape. Others still need lots of filing.

20993743in.jpg

Also got the three holes each stand for the m2 scres done whith them the whole car will be fastened to the white base.

20993742py.jpg

Also got a part of the solid links delivered. So I could finish one of the rear post adjusted to the right hight.

Very little update today. Got a set of black wheel adapters and changed the red for black ones. The original display model had also black adapters.

Allright. As I have got the micro mill and the drill press I needed to go ahead with this project, I started to make the mounting brass parts over again.

Some more details done. Fired on the lathe and turned the front struts down to correct hight and correct front diff angle. Looks better now. Also turned town the rear black struts to silver finish.

Could not resist to do some quick poser shots on white background just as the vintage display was :-)

Thank you! Still alot work to do. I hope it will turn out nicely when finished. The most difficult part still waiting for me. The display case with the moving parts. Still have to figure out how to realise that.

Today I just had a little time. So I started with the mockup. I aligned the rear and front end according to the edges of the shelf wood and marked the mounting holes for the base. The drilled the holes and hand tightened the screws. The position is correct and the holes will be used to transfer the measurements to the final wooden base display plate. Also marked the slot openings for the push rods that will transfer the rotating movements from the four gearboxes to the wishbones.

More updates coming soon.

Absolutely captivating. WHO NEEDS YOUTUBE WHEN YOU HAVE A LATHE OF YOUR OWN??? :D Wow, there are not words, I am sitting here typing, stupefied. I have been transfixed to every step and can't believe I am actually seeing it become reality. Really cool work here and I am just feeling like a lazy slug in comparison with all my half started/finished projects.

Keep up the work and I truly can't wait to see this in its final form. Now I know why you were looking for CLEAR gearboxes. ;)
