Tamiya motors in Nerf blasters ....

Recommended Posts

I have recently gotten in to modifying the battery powered Nerf fly wheel Blasters ....

Having pulled them apart and found that the Tamiya mini 4wd motors are a direct fit I have been modifying several types of fly wheel blasters.

The fully automatic CS-18 Rapidstrike now has two Plasma Dash motors for the fly wheels and a Hypa Dash 3 for the pusher motor ...................

The switch kit that replaces all the c r a p that was in the Blaster is by Blastersmiths UK.

Running on a 1 cell lipo  holy moses Batman ..... fire power :o

The semi automatic Stryfe is using two Hypa Dash 3 motors for the fly wheels running on four AA NiMH's ..............

I follow a chap who goes by the username of coop772 on youtube.

link to his modding of a rapidstrike

but my mods are better and I get more distance from the darts and power as I am using lipo

plus you can see the difference with using the blastersmiths UK switch kit in my picture

but it gives you the general idea

This is something I've heard of but never seen functioning. They look like a load of fun. I thought the standard gun was impressive but the one he modified, Wow! And yours is better? :o

Don't you need a license for these! Nice thread.

thanks chap,

no license needed, they are sold as a toy.

Hasbro or any toy gun maker cannot exceed 100 feet per second in projectile performance.

A standard Rapidstrike does about 80 fps.

coop772's modded Rapidstrike does just over 100 fps

Mine does 150 fps :D

Airsoft is cool but you cannot ......

  1. play with them in the house
  2. shoot your kids
  3. have Nerf battles around the house
  4. your kids cannot invite their mates over for Nerf battles
  5. re wire them
  6. put Tamiya motors in them
  7. re use your ammo

Nerf is indoor mega cool fun .......

but you can modify a Heng Long for better range and velocity to scare the heck out of next doors cat and stop it going number twos in MY GARDEN lol. The cat has since meet the ultimate poo defender though - my 10 month old male Doberman - problem solved .

Very true, I do like those Tanks. It would be a Tiger for me I think.

if you get one go for the pro version with the better gearbox's and metal tracks mate . Well worth the extra money . i have the walker bulldog but heavily modified with better smoke unit , better bb , better speaker and converted to 2.4gig . .

For the first time in history it looks like something branded Nerf will actually hurt when struck by it!

I've just been looking at these on line. Theres was a nerf top ten list and they put the demolisher as the best as it can fire grenades too. At the same time though they said you'll never hit anyone with a grenade?? Lol. So I think that makes it not the best.

Would you say that the cs18 rapid strike is the best of the nerf guns? I might have to get a few of these but modify mine (they can have the standard ones) and shoot the stuffing out of any visiting relatives. B)

*edit - i may try to paint them too so they look like the Halo weapons. They'll love that.

yes chap , the CS-18 Rapidstrike is the only fully automatic blaster Nerf do.

They are however currently expensive, £40 is the cheapest I have seen them and that's from Argos........... but you do get a pack of free darts :D

The Rapidstrike also requires the Tamiya motors, the Blastersmiths switch kit and a 1 cell lipo to get the fire power I have.

The Stryfe is the cheap option, very easily modded and can use AA NiMH's. It is only semi auto tho.

two for £30 at Argos.

Also the Demolisher is only semi auto but a popular choice.

Best I don't let my son see this thread, he loves NERF guns and I figure i'll be in for a lot of pain if he gets his hands on a modified one....

They are massive fun, my Rapidstrikes are very powerful.

what I used......

The motors for the fly wheels are these:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tamiya-15186-1-32-Racing-Mini-4WD-JR-Plasma-Dash-Motor-25000rpm-High-Torque-NIP-/351113271589?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item51bffb5925

the standard pusher motor is ok but for more rounds per minute use this motor:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tamiya-15477-1-32-JR-Racing-Mini-4WD-Hyper-Dash-3-Motor-/351109643611?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item51bfc3fd5b

The Blastersmiths switch and wireing upgrade pack:-

https://blastersmiths.co.uk/products/rapidstrike-wiring-and-switch-upgrade-kit

The 1 cell lipo I use:-

http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__19636__ZIPPY_5800mah_1S2P_60C_Hardcase_Pack.html

Warning - Do not use a more powerful battery with these Tamiya motors - you will burn them out. The are only rated at 3 volts. Trust me when I say run them in gently :o

I upgraded a few Nerf guns a while back when my nephews were into them. Had some mad garden games that were lots of fun. Being into Airsoft as well I had a few things to input. Only have an Alpha Trooper now that I was going to put a stronger spring into. It occurred to me it's dimension are pretty close to the Aliens Colonial Marines Pulse rifles :D

Once you've upgraded the power have you tried squeezing an Airsoft BB into the front of the dart? The squashy rubber end has a hole to let the air out on impact. You can push a .2g BB into that hole and it improves the weight balance and aero dynamics of the dart to travel straighter for longer :D It also make them hurt a bit more as there isn't a soft front to absorb the impact... we called them stingers! Wear eye protection though just in case.

You can also make simple Nerd tracer darts by taping a hearing aid type battery between the diodes on and LED, then sticking it into the open end of the dart. Looks great in the dark!

Which of the nerf guns shoots best, range, least jams, accuracy?

I got the tiny single shot and it almost shoots as good as the elite strongarm (not as fast tough)

no need chap as I do not use the Nerf Elite darts, I use the much better koosh darts. the end is weighted better and solid.

also you can get glow in the dark darts now ..... :D

they all are nearly the same until you have modified them, to stop the jams take out all the locks.

but in stock form the Retaliator is the best spring blaster and the Rapidstrike is the best battery blaster.
