I am looking for recommendations for replacement brushed motors for a vintage Clodbuster. The silver cans that were in the car when I get are well past there best and are fit for the bin. Should I just replace them with a pair of Mabuchi 540RS motors from ebay or is there a better option that isnt going to break the bank?

I am going to be using the original MSC, I dont know if that makes any difference?

Be aware the Clod needs motors with either zero timing (RS540) or a pair with mirrored timing where one motor is meant to run reversed.

Original MSC won't handle high currents, best not put in hi-Po motors running parallel.

You might try waterdipping to see if it'll revive your current 540s btw. Nothing to lose!

Don't buy silver cans on eBay, ask on here. We must all have draws full of the dam things.......

Arghhh! Too late, I have ordered 3 silver cans from ebay. They were only £18 for all 3 including delivery so not the end of the world. 2 in the Clod and one in my Boomerang.

That is not bad to be honest. The postage is not cheap, they weight a ton for their size

Most people on here probably have them lying around; not me. I use 'em in almost every car. They're low amp draw, maintenance-free, and fast enough to get me in trouble in most cars, including my Clodbuter. Which, by the way, is running its original 540 motors, which are rusty all over (truck sat in a damp garage for many years before I bought it) but still pull strong.

You should think about replacing the MSC, though. You'll gain a ton of run time and a little speed in a stock Clod just by installing a good ESC and hard-wiring the motors in parallel (the "power" mode on the switch). I run mine with a Dynamite Tazer ESC and a 2400mah 2S lipo. Plenty fast with 540s, and runs for a good half-hour on a charge.

If your going to stick with the manual speed control I'm guessing you are trying to keep your vintage clod vintage so best to stay with the silver cans. Most modern motors have adjustable timing so can be run in a clod but a esc is a must :) Got any photos of your clod build?

Stock silver cans are fine. A lot of the hard core Clod builders still use them, cause

A. good brushed motors are hen's teeth nowadays

B. You can always throw more voltage at them with a good esc

If I was to do another clod, and wanted a little bit more top speed, I would buy adjustable motor mounts and install 15t pinions. There is a very tiny bit of file/dremel work to the hole for the pinion, but that would be what I would do :)

Use stock silvercans and add a 3S LiPo, the model will fly.

Max

I have done this on my Twin Daggers, no need to worry about motor timing then and motors are cheap.
