I wondered about that too. The softer tires do work better. Back in the day before there were a lot of aftermarket options, Big Bear tires were often used on Blackfoots and the like because they had a nice soft compound.

I have a feeling that this has been mentioned but in case it hasn't, there is a guy on YouTube who's suffered with the clicky diff issue and has discovered that Tamiya's recommended 2 black rubber o rings in the gearbox joints are to blame. He's gone with just one either side now and that has 'seemingly' fixed the issue.

Apparently on full compression the the tightness of two rings was forcing the diff to turn and putting undue pressure on everything whereas with one its still cushioned but isn't as heavily forced in thus not stressing the diff.

Seems to make a lot of sense but why Tamiya failed to realise this I have no idea. You'd think that they would have stress tested one to destruction right?

Stress testing one to destruction??? I'm doing that!!!!! Lol

I'll have to get on taking one of those black rubber o-rings out...

Ha haaa, enjoy!

This is the video for reference:

Also, this is one sweeeeeeeeeeet vid of the 2015 Monster Beetle off-roading. I think I may have to invest in some lights for my sons.

Anybody else spend WAY too much time wet sanding a hard body for primer??

Figured I'd wet sand it real quick before I head out to lunch w my daughter... NOPE!!!

Gonna pull the nose and tailgate off and do it the right way when I get back... (Midnight Pumpkin, for those of you who are like "tailgate?? The MB don't have a tailgate!!! Idiot!!)

OK, I guinea pig'ed myself and got one... The d00d said I was the first... wish me luck!

Received today... Its pretty rough looking, but seems to be pretty strong and well made. Googlez recommends XTC-3D to finish it up, but I'm not paying $25 to use on a $20 piece! I'll just hit it with some sand-paper and paint... Good enough for Frog Science...

I'll try to get it mounted tonight and post pix... But I'm having to go out of town this week for work, so I may not get to it until this weekend...

Yea this was mentioned here previously so I built mine with only one o-ring on each side but still got the clicking diff.

Tamiya should have released a hopup ball diff for this car since they currently have the Frog, Brat and now the MB in production. They made one for the re-re SRB buggies so I'm crossing my fingers that they release one for the ORV cars as well

Well ! , If they were going too , It would have been done already , As the boomerang , hotshot , supershot would have got it .

As it's the same part use in them & that would have been great , But No go yet ...

Ahh I thought I remembered reading something about an o ring earlier. I couldnt find the post when I went looking back.

Grrr, sad to hear that this hasn't alleviated the issue.

I removed the extra o-rings from my model last night but the diff still feels very clicky when I turn the wheels by hand. The outdrive cups also move a little too far out of the diff without the o-rings. I'll run it this afternoon after work to know for sure. I ordered a set of new bevel gears off ebay last night. I'm going to rebuild the diff with them and try shimming it to tighten it up. If that doesn't work, I'll go the oldfrogshot route. I really want this to be a runner and not just sit on a shelf looking pretty.

What is the general consensus on shimming ORV gearboxes? Worth it? Hoe many shims do people go for?

Posted

I've never tried shimming, but until I can find a set of old CRP differential supports, I'll try it. I had a pair of the CRP units on my original beetle and never had any diff trouble. I'm convinced that because they fit so tightly in the sideplates that they helped prevent the diff separation.

Interesting idea - the colour choice is rather unfortunate though. With some skilful painting, it could look quite cool. Personally I would have gone for something more related to the car, maybe a VW logo or some such.

That's um.. an interesting pinion cover. I put in one of the small thin extra shims out of my Bruiser re-re kit (it was exactly the right size). Everything still spins freely so we'll see...I fully believe at one point I'll tear the whole thing down and do the Oldfrogshot screw mod, but for now I'll give the shim a go.
