Mad Max Fury Road War Rig build

Recommended Posts

I've added the leaf springs to the fuel pod (Thanks to TC member Sayer for those) :

img33435_24112015183148_1.jpg

and some axle mounts:

img33435_24112015183148_2.jpg

and it's up on it's wheels

img33435_24112015183148_3.jpg

:)

I still need to do further work on the axle mounts to add grub screws to hold them rigidly in place on the axles, but the above picture gives an inkling of what it's going to be like. At this stage the fuel pod weighs a shade under 2.5Kg, so I think I'm going to need all 2330Watts from the brushless motor going in the tractor unit ......

Looks massive next to a FAV, and this is just the fuel pod :

More progress on the FAV, fitted a mock high level air intake, fitted the lights (3Racing kit), painted the camouflage on, painted the machine gun, and put some rust in the bottom of the storage box. Still got to tidy the wiring for the lights, and fit the passenger (I've ordered another driver figure with a smaller torso, which might fit in a bit better, just waiting for it to arrive.

Got the pod part of the fuel pod fitted. I put brass and aluminium flanges in the arctic and Antarctic, and used a rod threaded into the arctic to go through the aluminium chassis plate, and it's secured underneath with a flange nut. It'll be supported better once the metalwork goes in between the pod and the chassis.

Not achieved much this weekend, one of those times when you put a lot of effort in exploring dead ends, and not a lot gets achieved :( Still, I have managed to tidy up the wiring on the FAV lights.

Before:

After re-soldering and wire locking the wires in place:

how about Ray Lynch head from the Wild One on the Willy torso

I think the helmet might be a bit on the big side. So far I've gone with the helmeted bruiser driver figure (sat on top of the dictionary), thinking about trying to modify the helmet somewhat to make it look different, but I'll have to see how it goes. I'm not much of sculptor ........

Just compared the Ray head to the Bruiser / Blazer head and there's not much difference in the scale tbh - might be worth a look

Looked at the head and it would have been preferable, but ouch, the sprue is expensive, and I've already bought 2 figures now, so I'm going to stick with what I've got for the time being. Good suggestion though.

Talking about Mad Max .

Stopped to get fuel for my bike today as we are out touring

Ran into Steve Bisley and his son today at Quirindi (which is in the middle of nowhere country NSW) at the servo getting fuel for his bike and got to chatting said to him your that actor ! arn't you ?.

He laughed and pointed to himself and said that actor huh ! ...then put out his hand and say G'day I'm Steve .....Doh !...I should have said your Goose from Mad Max arn't you or the Goose is cooked !.

Top Bloke.

Finally managed to make some progress today. Got my head round the trig for making the supports for the pod on the fuel pod. Still got one to fit, and all of them still need some form of trimming to get the outer shape correct, but I'm pleased that they all fit in the slots I machined in the base for them. I also got a 3d printed turret this week, and that is taped on ATM to give an idea of what it's going to look like. It's coming together slowly :)

Still got to glue them in place yet, thinking about what else I need to do to it before I commit to the glue. (I'm thinking about silicon as it will have a good degree of flex in it.)

I've now glued in the supports with clear silicon, they're very rigid and I'm happy with the result. I've also added a 'dump valve' to the rear of the pod and the rear blanking panel for the back of the chassis:

img33435_15122015221635_3.jpg

and the grab handles and filler cap for the top of the pod:

img33435_15122015221635_5.jpg

Edit 21/12/2015:

Got the paint on now, as well as the braces for the turret. Not much left to do on this now, apart from adding a weapon to the turret, and the mesh guard at the front of the pod.

I've got the sub-frame done for the main tri axle trailer. This is going to bolt to the chassis frame rails via the 8 mount points at the top (The chassis rails are going to bolt the outside of this frame).

Completed a bit more on the FAV pursuit vehicle today. Painted the N2o bottle earlier this week and have made an aluminium bracket to fit it to the side of the chassis this morning. Also managed to finally get the passengers arms fitted. Painted the face earlier this week too, but that looks awful, I'm rubbish at painting figures. More work to do on that yet I think...

Done some more on the trailer today. Got the 6 brackets made for fitting the axles to the leaf springs. I did originally try to make my own U bolts, but this ended in failure. I've still got to make the plates to clamp to the top of the bracket, but at least now I can mock up the subframe.

img33435_24012016202234_2.jpg

The cutter mark was already in the metal when I started making this one. It's number 7 and was a spare in case I ruined one of the others during manufacture.

Tried the beetle shell I'm going to mount on the top of the tanker trailer for width:

img33435_24012016202234_4.jpg

img33435_24012016202234_1.jpg

It's going to be a shame to chop up the shell really. It's brand new and I'm going to have to remove the front end. I was not aware at the time, but I should have bought an M06 beetle shell instead of the blitzer shell.

Remind me how much of that shell you need?, I might have something.

E2A: Just looked at page 1 and see that it has a full bodied rear, oooohh, errrr misses. I have a baja shell that is a bit chopped up all ready if it will help?

Could you PM a couple of pictures of it ? I still need the bonnet in one piece, as it looks like the bonnet was welded to the roof for some reason on the 1:1. I must admit though, I'd really like one of the lexan 'full bodied rear' shells, especially as it will be lighter than the abs shell. I got the clamps completed for the tri axle sub frame this evening, and when I pick up the subframe with the axles attached it feels like it weighs about the same as a clod buster, so a bit less weight will be a good thing. Now that the clamps are done, I can start on the chassis rails for the trailer. I'm going to need a camera with a wider angle lense when I come to upload the pictures of that (The chassis rails are going to be 1.35m long :) )

Since the last post I've got the clamps completed for the axles, and got the main trailer chassis rails cut. Went through 5 cutting discs on the angle grinder and had to then do 5.4m of cuts (1.35mx4) on the mill to smooth down and level out the cut edges. Drilled the holes to mount to the subframe. The next job is to make supports for the chassis rails.

Here's a couple of shots to demonstrate the size, although the clod is a little on the short side to stand in for the tractor unit.

I just had a thought, what would be the scale of this if you were using clod wheels and tires
