Pictures of the final part of the gearbox, made this from 3 pieces of HDPE sandwiched together:

and fitted into the truck:

Got the last ten ribs cut out for the trailer last week, got the flash cut off them and tidied them up, only to find that the guy who did the template for me had used the small ellipse for the front part of the tanker, not the larger one for the rear, so I now have 10 spare ribs for the front and am 10 short for the rear of trailer. £20 of HDPE down the toilet .  On the plus side I've driven the truck with the new gearbox and there is no shortage of torque now, with both trailers on it will pick up the front axle off the ground when you open the throttle from a slow rolling start. Top speed is about where I want it so it's all good. Got to try and find the time now to crack on with building the blade for the front. Any suggestions from where I can get components for the bodywork are welcome (Particularly a lexan shell I might be able to chop up to form the fleetmaster part of the cab.)

The natural weathering looks very good. I wonder if, when finished, it might be worth giving it a good clean and degrease, then running it somewhere dusty for a bit, then before touching it, spray a coat of matt clear over the entire model to lock the dirt in place? Weathering don't get much more authentic than that!

I would probably clean it, do some minor weathering (scrathes, dangs, no artificial dirt), and then take photos so that we can see how dirty it got after the first run. Dirt!

Only problem is, my son drew a cat on the side of the fuel pod last night with his finger

I think I'll probably blow if off with the air compressor, I've got some more ribs to glue to the main trailer and it will have to be clean for that, then take it out for another run. I've also started building the blade for the front end, so will try and get that done soon as well, but I'm making it from 3mm thick steel plate so it's taking a lot longer to shape than styrene sheet ;)

Progress so far since the last post. I've now made a good start on the plough components. Got 3 more verticals to make, plus spacer tubes, and then the insert plates, but this is enough  to give an impression:

That is looking wicked! I love the look of the rust already on the plates.

Have you found a truck body to use?

Nope. The bonnet section looks scratch built in the film, so I will start with that, then try and find a suitable truck cab to graft onto it, and then a car shell for the back end. Still got a lot of work to do on the front blade yet though ;)

So, had a bit of extra work to do on the Rig this weekend. Took it out this week to figure out how fast I wanted it to go and settled on 28Km/h as a sensible and controllable top end. Then decided to give it a rip round a nearby BMX track and it took off over one of the jumps and one of the front shocks flew apart when it landed. I found the thread on the shock end had been stripped, so have made 2 more shock ends from aluminium:

Did the BMX jump have a war-rig sized hole in it?  leaving a trail of smoke and fire. lol

Got the spacers and the vertical braces done for the front plough now. Next job is to make cardboard templates for the inserts to go between the vertical plates.

Sure seems that way - my ankles hurt just looking at how pointy it all is :P

Top fabrication work, as usual!

That looks pretty authentic, I would drive my RC out the way if I saw that coming towards it.... enter it into Robot Wars or just mount it up and run through a vegetable patch to cause a right old mess. Nice work.

I was very careful not slip with the allen key when I assembled it, my son wanted to help put it together but I said, 'no, too sharp and pointy'. I think some sort of foam guard may be in order when it is not being driven around.

I am not sure even I could be trusted assembling it without injury! The foam guard is another great idea.

Got the teeth mounted, just got to fit the plates between them now. Going to have a go at making them from 1mm thick steel plate and braze them on.

Fitted on the trailer and the fuel pod and measured the overall length, not bad at 2400mm :)

Absolutely in awe of this in every way imaginable from the design to the engineering and execution. The fact that you can scratch build your own gearboxes out of metal no less is just astonishing to me, I wish I had 1/10 of your talent.

I've been lurking for weeks watching this thread!
