[:(]I have just rebuilt my diff for my King Cab, I followed the directions and the truck does not take off when I hit the gas, it will get up to speed after a few seconds and run fine. The motor sounds like it is just spinning and the truck will slowly start moving. I checked the gear mesh and everything is making good contact. Can anybody help me on this?

Anybody know of any other alternatives to the stock transmission for this vehicle? I remember finding a web site that had belt drive trannys that fit the King Cab, but I can't remember the site to save my butt[:(] If anybody knows of it, please tell me, I want to find an alternative to the stock ball diff in these trucks.

After racing the KC/Hilux quite a while in the old days - the diff (if its still in good nick) has a secret. The type of grease you use in it. You MUST use a "slipp diff/Stealth diff/Ball Diff" orientated grease in it. Normal grease DOES NOT work!!

Clean the diff with petrol to get rid of all the old grease and pack the balls in the centre gear with ball diff grease - assemble and tighten it good.

Hope it helps

Apologies if this sounds really patronising, but you never know - Before you strip the diff again, did you touch the wheels and tyres...? Could the wheels be spinning inside the tyres...?

I will try the diff grease, I thought the grease might be a problem, but the directions tell you to grease the diff. I will get some diff grease and try it. (Wireless, thanks for the suggestion, but the tires have been glued to the rims, so they wouldn't roll off the rim)[:D] Keep the suggestions coming, I'll post any results or problems that come up with this topic.

This is the one bit of advice i keep regurgatating from time to time, can't remember who told it me but it worked for me...

Basically on old diffs the balls can wear a very fine groove in the washers that push against them, its almost un noticeable but makes a difference. The trick is simply to flip these washers over so you have a nice new side for the balls to push against. (that is unless the guy that had before you had already done this trick [;)])

Once you've followed all this reccomendations, doný forget to really tighten does three BB6 hex screws that join both diff housings (step 16 of the manual), as jacalouw said.

This makes a huge difference in performance.

Also remember to experiment with the numbers of thrust washers and disk springs used inside the diff. I've found that you need to place at least one more in each side of the diff to gain proper tightness.

All these troubles are worth it: I´ve used a Dyna Run ST in my KC for some time now and haven´t altered the diff's setting once you get it right. It never really loosens, you see.

And if none of the above ideas work then completely fill the diff with superglue[:0] like the previous owner of my King Cab did!!!![;)]

Here's what a weekend of racing has just done to my King Cab innards:

.....is there something wrong in this picture..?......[:(]

Anyway, is there a way to lock the diff, (other than the superglue method...!) ?? Surely someone has tried something.....?

I'm just sick of the infamous "Diff Slip" of the King Cab......

Ouch, nasty pic there [8)]

I tracked down an Avante diff from some advice given to me by Kontemax. It's a gear diff and the diff gear's teeth are the same pitch as the KC's ball diff. There's a little bit of work to get it to fit, but otherwise it works great. You never have to worry about it again.

ive seen an instant cure to all kingcab gearbox problems.... fit a stealth box off an rc10, thats what jamie booth did to his astute(back in the 90's when he drove for tamiya)it goes in without much modification.

You know they're supposed to slip a little, ball diffs are the scale equivalent of a limited slip differential on real sportscars. Sounds like it just isn't tight enough.

One way of locking it without destroying it is epoxy putty. Push some over the gears to mould it and then take it out until it sets - then put it back in.

UPDATE:[:D] I found a King Cab on eBay a while back with a Thorp Ball Diff, bought the truck and striped it down (chassis was a mess, kept the good parts for spares) and started rebuilding the trans on my other K.C. Still in the working stage, will know how it runs soon. I thought the tranny looked like the same shape and size of a RC-10 tranny. Will have to look for a used one as a back-up. Thanks for all the ideas, I hope this helps someone else down the road.
