Anyone attempt hop ups on the tamiya classic hummer? Motor, tires, shocks, etc.. It is it worth changing or is it best left alone?

My friends hummer goes like a stink. I put in a Maxtec 13 turn motor, full ball bearings and the manta ray hardened shaft. the standard Kit CVA dampers are fine. running different tires ruins the scal appearance.

Yup, Jim, if you are talking about 1:10 touring car tires - I hear you - that would look really weird... But the Tamiya Pajero MTW BF Goodrich tires will look good on it I bet! A company named Carson also makes these BFG Mud terrain tires, only slightly softer compound/ This might be worth looking into if you need replacements... [:)]

As for tires go, you could also mount 1:8 chrome wheels and tires, to make it a ganster car. You know, like the ones owned by those rappers seem in MTV Cribs - those people who also all got the very same one-of-a-kind pool table... Either way - you get the point a guess - if you do this, you would want to get rid of the army scheme. [:P]

As far as other optional parts... ball bearings are always worth having, as well as a ESC and the other 'basic' stuff. As Jim also implied, a reinforced driveshaft is worth having - as the standard one seems jsut some silly bycicle spoke. You can go for the Tamiya one, or buy one from Carson. It need some modification to fit properly, but nothing drastical. I have one in my Blazing Star now, at it's just fine. [8D]

Locking diffs - or not, motor, etc. do really depend on what you want to use the car for - street running, crawling, etc. etc... [;)]

I run a variety of Hummers, some stock, some with 80+ turn motors, I sometimes lock the rear diff as it makes a huge difference when playing or crawling, I sometimes remove the damper internal spacers and play with spring rates. The BFG tyres make quite a difference, giving far more traction (the GY pattern seem to break away too soon when running hotter motors). Only one of mine is still on the original "coat hanger" propshaft (coincidentally also the only one still on nylon bushes instead of decent bearings) - but to be changed soon. Whatever I do to them however, I've tried to keep them looking at least fairly stock. I guess modifications are only limited to your wallets' tolerance [:D]

I have a hummer and another one "under construction". I think the 2 most important hop ups are ballracing the whole chassis and getting the thicker Manat Ray propshaft.

Be warned though, in the UK anyway, the Manat Ray props are hard to find - I don't think Tamiya make them any longer [8)]. I got both of mine from victor101car - might be worth seeing if he can source any more?

My built Hummer has a 19T team Orion motor in it and its plenty quick enough. Main problem with the Hummer is that it has quite a high centre of gravity and so will roll if you turn at any kind of speed [:I]

Still a great Tamiya kit though - one of their most scale looking kits out there!

Cheers,

Chris

I will let you guys in on a secret. the Avante propshaft is identical to the manta ray hop up. you would have to figure out something for the ends that go into the transmissions as I don't think the stock ones will fit the avante prop shaft

I have the Carson hop-ups item he described. I had mailed Martin too with my own suggestion - but this one seems different? All I had to do was sanding the ends of the little gearbox shafts - the end opposite to the one that the driveshaft slots into. These ends rubber in the gearboxes providing a lot of friction. I hope I explained that a bit cleatly though... Either way - I guess Carson's products are not really up to accuracy as the Tamiya items. [;)]

To answer your question finally - I got it from a German onlinestore named Conrad. [:I]

I heared once from a very experienced modeller that black wheelnuts (or even all black hardware throughout) would add a lot of realism to the Hummer! [8D]
