I tried running my Clodbuster with 2 x-car 45a ESC's. Apparently these (very cheap) ESC's are good for 15T motors but mine only lasted a couple of runs before they gave up.

I am running HPI Firebolt 15t motors in the Clod and am looking for replacement ESC's.

Any recommendations? The cheaper the better and I dont mind if it is a single ESC or twin ESC's. I have my eye on a pair of Quicrun 1060's but if I can save some money and get something else I will.

Thanks

If you're already looking at 1060s then I recommend you take a look at the WP860 by Hobbywing. Same 'range' of ESCs but built specifically for the application you need - twin-motor, Lipo-compatible. The only problem is your motor turn limit, whilst the 860 has a 'limit' of 12T+ you have twice as many motors but still only 60A continuous current, so your turn count might be too low.

I would still go for that option, especially if running Lipo, because you'll get a better kick from the power source even if just running silver can motors. If you want to run the motors you already have then I don't think you have much choice without spending £££ or running two ESCs as you have already suggested...

You can get the 1060 for 18€ shipped will be hard to find anything cheaper that handles 15T, there is a dual quicrun 860 but thats limited to 2x 24T

According to ModelSport's site:

So provided you stick to 2s, you're good.

This has tempted me, faster cloddy, faster!

Well if they forget half of what is important

Hobbywing : scroll down and read -

*Note: WP-860-DUAL-BRUSHED has two outputs to drive 2 motors. When driving 2 motors simultaneously, the Turns of the motors need to be increased.

o.

That's not very helpful of them it :(

(not looking great, I'm already having to send an analog servo back to them that they're marking as digital)

Thanks for highlighting that!

I'm getting a quicrun wo 860 ESC for my Clodbuster.

If I understand right, this ESC is limited to 2 motors with 24 turns.

The superstock tz & bz motors (wich I have laying around) are 23 turn motors, so I can't use them in my clod?

Am I right?

So the best Hop up motors for my Clod will be the torque tuned or the sport tuned.

But I don't know if one of them is timed, so I don't know if I'm able to throw them in if I want more speed/torque.

Has the torque tuned more torque than the sports tuned??

For info:

Because of the MSC, I never drove my (used, stock & vintage) Clodbuster, I wanted to wait for my ESC and the ball bearings to arrive for my first testdrive.

So I don't know if I'm happy with the silvercans or if I have to hop up...

Info 2:

I'll get a cpe Aluminum Chassis Brace & Anti-Rotation Bracket Set for more sturdyness but for "stock" looks. Is this enough or are there more weakpoints to the truck that must be updated for a runner??

The 1060 has the same power rating as the 860 but no fan. I run a 1060 on dual silvercan from a Y lead with no issues. Two 1060's is possibly the cheapest way to run low turn twin brushed.

I'm thinking of running two bz motors off a 12T HPi esc on my Dual Hunter. Although 23T each = 11.5 turn effective, I'm hoping it'll have enough headroom/safety margin built in not to fry seeing as it's only .5 turn out!!

It'll be a little while before I can afford it though!

The turn limit on an ESC is only a rough way of specifying the current threshold on the ESC. It assumes the motors are geared appropriately. Running hot motors in the Clod with stock gearing will pull way more than the assumed current of the ESC manufacturer. If you havent modded the gearboxes to allow a smaller pinion to be used, my view is that you would need to over-spec the ESC for this application. Personally I'm running two TBLE02S ESCs with 11.5 brushless on each gearbox and the whole system runs cool, and gives nice but not insane performance on 2S. And it comes in at a similar price as Quicrun 1060s with cheap brushed motors, too.

Ok, then i'll try the spot tuned or the torque tuned motors if the clod is too slow for my taste.

What would you recommend?

Ps: I don't think the wp860 has a fan.

I ordered it via ebay and on the picture there wasn't a fan.

Lots of people are happy with twin Sport Tuned in the Clod so I would give that a try. If I was running brushed I would go for two 1060 ESCs rather than one bigger one.

Just tried out two ESC's (1060s) this morning, and after a bit of figuring out of the controller, it works a treat!

However, I need to source a y splitter cable, so I don't have to use two batteries at once all the time.

I've not managed to find any on ebay, so I guess buying some ends and getting the soldering iron out is in order.

Of course, seeing this, I'm now thinking of the dual servo 4ws upgrade, but that's for another thread :D

Hm..... ......I just realized that the clodbuster has that eco switch.

So does anyone know if its better to use a dual ESC with the silvercans of to use a normal ESC and that odd ecoswitch?

Does the ecoswitch have any usefull properties if I use modern 3000 mAh NiCd batteries?

The switch switches the motors between series and parallel configuration, useful to conserve battery life back when 1700mAH was considered an impressively large capacity.

These days, I would leave it out of the circuit entirely, and run dual ESCs in parallel off a modern high-capacity battery.
