I have decide to replace my ageing tools, so after some thoughts on what pliers, screwdrivers etc people think are worth getting. Selection is so vast with the internet adding to the likes of screw fix, toolstation, DIY sheds thought it might be worth asking on here what others experiences are.

Thanks

Regarding screw drivers: Try to get your hands on JIS screwdrivers, there are toolsets available by Tamiya. They match Tamiya's cross-head screws much better than regular Philips drivers.

Yes the Tamiya JIS medium and large screwdrivers are a must have, how I coped with the wrong philips screwdrivers for so long I will never know, night and day difference!

I would also like to recommend MIP 's Metric hex driver 3 piece set. The tolerances are so good they are like OJ Simpsons hand in the glove! No more stripped out grub screws and the like! and if they ever wear (some guys have had them since the 80s!) MIP refurbish them for 5 bucks a pop!

Just ordered my second tamiya 74085 RC Tool Set (the blue ones) from Banzai, left the first to my nephews hands for fixing his WR01 I gave him.

I'll third the recommendation for the Tamiya JIS screwdrivers. I never realized there was a difference between what I was using and the JIS sizes until about a year ago, and all my builds since then have been much more pleasant! I was surprised the first time I used one and saw how well they locked into the screw head.

Andy, the screw drivers are a must have imo, cheap enough and perfect for the job.

I think a cutting mat and pit stand are also really helpful and a sonic cleaner too.

Put some r/c bits on your Christmas list, it will give your family something to buy you!

Thanks for all the replies guys. Picked myself up a red handled set and single +2 yesterday from Mick Charles Models. Used tonight in anger and yes they are all they are cracked up to be (which you would expect when simply using the correct tools for the job!)

Also went down screwfix and treated myself to a new set of mini pliers. (used my daughters small hands and new found interest in RC to justify them! :) )

Simon, never even considered an ultrasonic cleaner. Are they actually any good or just a gimmick? What do they clean up?

Great bit of kit, they come recommended Andy.

Cheap enough to be worth having and small enough to not get in the way.

If you're going to use it once I wouldn't bother buying one, but otherwise I'd say worth it.
