I think there's no upgrade needed, new ball connectors or ball cups should be sufficient.

However, if there's enough room for ball collars, they may be helpful against the ball cups popping off the ball connectors. That's what I use for mounting oil dampers which often gets disconnected during impacts otherwise. But I never got a steering link disconnected by mistake.

If you really want to upgrade though, the hardened steel turnbuckle set for the DF-02 fits the DF-01 rather well, with the addition of Tamiya's reinforced ball cups on the steering tierods. This is what I run on mine and it gives no trouble at all.

what's the best way of checking and adjusting the tracking when fitted,

The best way is to invest in a setup station that allows the accurate measurement of all steering and suspension geometry. However this is probably overkill for a DF-01. A ruler, protractor, flat surface and good eye are enough for my needs.
