Rough Rider

Does anybody know original size pinion gear a Rough Rider takes? and if i can maybe use a 16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23 tooth tamiya pinion gear instead?

PLease im desperate. I want this thing running tonight....[]

Hello mate, the RR came with two gearing options:

15t pinion and 70t spur (low ratio for off roading)

or

20t pinion and 65t spur (high ratio for tarmac)

I'm not certain as I haven't checked but I believe the pitch of the teeth is the same as the 32dp ones used in the hotshot, boomerang, falcon, thundershot, bear hawk etc. It is certainly a coarse pitch and you can't use the newer pinions from current Tamiya cars (ie TL01) which are 48 or 42dp.

The stock pinions for srb are a fine pitch similar but not exactly 48 pitch. The 32 pitch gears from later cars will not work. Here is what one looks like

I think they are metric module 0.6 like the after AV-ante Tamiyas and also the modern ones?

Have you guys been on the beer or something??? That looks pretty coarse to me, I'm just off out to check my scorcher pinion against a 32dp and 48dp. I was only looking at these just the other day when I was digging out some pinions for Moosey and I'm sure they looked same as pitch on BF/MB pinion which was in the same box in shed.

LOL, OK guys you are correct, I've just tried a TL01 pinion which is 48dp and that meshes OK although the SRB pinion teeth have a different shape and in brass it makes it look deceptively coarser than it actually is. However, when you fit an AV pinion into the SRB it doesn't fit correctly, not a perfect mesh so I don't know what the pitch of those old SRB pinions is!?

TL01 isnt 48dp its a .6 or .4 module size very similar to the 48dp but meshes very noisily.

I highly doubt they would have the pinion. I stole the pic above from one of Jsourbeck's current eBay auctions. Since we have that stupid rule of no live auction links, you will have to search it out under his seller name.

Thanks man, ill have to. Its not easy getting spares for vintage Tamiya's hey, especially in South Africa!

If I remember correctly, you were also not allowed to make these hints directly pointing at a certain live auction, as it would come down to basicly the same (only in a more difficult way). [8)]

I hope you don't mind me sticking to the rules a bit much. I'm sure you only intended to help though - still rules are rules. If you don't agree though, you are always open to discuss them. IMHO rules are pointless if they are not discusable. []

So please dont'take this as offensive towards you. But still - as rule #506 cannot save you now - run! []
