Well I got all set to take my Scout down the woods for a drive and then I realised the rocks in my front garden might make a good practice ground. My wife and neighbours now think I am nuts but I had a good half hour of fun and some ideas of how I want to modify the Scout.

What I need from the community is ideas. How do I make the course better, what is the skill in crawling and what do I need to know?

I do not want to do anything but have fun and I do not want to spend money but I do want to pop out front and have a play and test mods whenever I can.

First free mod I'd do is remove those diff guards and cut their posts off with a dremel. That'll give you a lot more ground clearance. Be careful not to cut too deep as you'll go through the casing and leave a hole for debris to get into the axle gears. It's not the end of the world as you can fill any hole with glue.

I was looking at those mods. They are a huge hang-up point

I was going to make my own skid plate and raise the steering link to free up some space. Next mod will be high clearance lower arms, need them to go to 4ws anyway.

Any tips on how to arrange the rocks? Is it generally a long run or lots of shorter sections?

If you never get a chance to visit Radshape, take a look at their crawler/scaler course. It might give you some ideas.

You might also draw some inspiration from the scale truck crowd, where garden tracks with scale roads, bridges, etc. are quite popular.

Or if it is pure crawling that you are interested in, a big pile of rocks that you can rearrange every so often would make for a good practice area.

I did think about a few planks and some logs to spice it up a bit. I need to make it look like a rock garden so my front garden does not look like a junk pile.

The Scout axles are tough enough to not need any skid plate, it'll just be another thing to get hung up on anyway. Rock wise I'd go with whatever you can get away with 😏 Being able to change the layout every now and then would keep it interesting. Logs, wooden bridges, chicken wire... anything that'll give you traction works.

Thanks I will get cutting and smoothing.

Need high clearance lower arms next. Is there a good way to make these or is it best to by Axial AX10 ones?

I've seen threaded rod with alum tubing over it bent to shape but it's tricky to get them symmetrical. I have seen Maverick Scout arms bent in a similar way but I've not done that myself. I just bought mine from eBay so I had the option to swap over.

Decided to have a play again today. Remembered the car needed some fettling

I took the tray off the top and looked at lowering the COG. I decided the crash guards needed to go so I repurposed them.

The rear one was turned around and put on top of the axle for the battery. I have a couple of super shorty packs so the fit and weight is good.

The front guard was put upside down on the top to fit the ESC and receiver
