So I built a Pumpkin back in 1989, and a couple of other cars a bit later, but then I drifted away from RC like a lot of people do. So what sucked me back in ? Unimogs. My first ever toy car was a Matchbox 'mog and I've loved them ever since. A couple of years ago I stumbled across a pic online of the just-released CW-01 'mog and immediately rushed out and bought one. The old Pumpkin was still hanging up in the garage and I remembered what a hoot it was flailing around on two wheels barely under control.

First I started poking round the 'net in places like this, and the nostalgia thing kicked in. So the 'mog stayed in it's box while I acquired various hop-up parts, and then I got distracted by other stuff I never bought back in the day like a KingCab and WW2. But I've had the last two days off work, the missus was working and the weather was miserable so it was finally Unimog time.

So I mentioned that I've been out of the game for a while ? Well, this was my first build with an ESC, my first experience of 2.4GHz and even my first NiMh battery (LiPo is science-fiction to me at the moment). I built it with bearings all round, I also fitted a SportTuned motor, a set of Fastrax oil-damped shocks and Pro-Line tyre foams. The plan was also to do the 5th shock and FX-10 mods from the word go, but I found myself short of all the necessary hardware. Everyone on here has built a CW-01 before so there's little point in build photos. I know a lot of you can build one in less than an hour without looking at the instructions, but I took my time over it and really enjoyed it.

Some of you may be wondering why it appears to have white wheels (they're chrome in the kit) and alloy Lunchbox body mounts ? Well, I hate painting Lexan shells almost as much as I love Unimogs, so although this will definitely be a 'mog eventually, in the short term it's going to be a Lunchbox. I've never had one of those and really don't know why not.

I bought a LB shell a while ago and painted it during the summer. I settled on a NYPD theme (hence Fuzzbox - you were wondering about that weren't you ?) and knocked up some one-off decals on the laser-printer at work. Then I got carried away with lights - it has 4 front/rear LED's, 8 flashing LED's and the roof bar.

Wiring it all up was a bit of a pain. It's all run off a PP3 and there's a roof switch to control them but eventually I want to switch them remotely via the 3rd channel.

That's it for now. The 5th shock and FX-10 mods will get done when I get time, along with the remote light switching. And when the Unimog shell is done, I suppose I'll have to get another CW-01 to put this one on. I'm pleased with it though.

So they were printed on paper an clear coated over ?

No, just laser-printed onto some decal paper that my missus found for me at Hobbycraft, and stuck straight on. They're not great, the film is more visible than I'd like. There's no clearcoat, in fact there's no white paint either, that's just the bare shell with blue sprayed on. Looks alright from a few feet away though.
