Porsche 959 MF-01X, TGB body project

Recommended Posts

Well, been a while since I last posted...

I'm taking the plunge, decided on building up a Porsche 959 based on the new MF-01X chassis set at 210mm.

Ordered the following

- 1/12 TGB P type 959 body

- TGB P Type 959 wing

- TGB P Type 959 interior

- ******* 959 sticker set

Need to buy

- Jimny MF-01X

- Options… :-)

- RC Rally Raiders 959 1/10 wheels

Looking for some insight on locating some 959 drivers heads. Anybody have any used bits they can part with? Don't fancy sporting for eBay units and can also craft my own.

Interesting possibilities are Knight Customs SRB 3D printed head, helmet and visor. Just 1/10 scale and wondering if they could be scaled down?

I do have several kits of the Toyota 4WD driver and could use the head only version, create a helmet and make a visor. Any other suggestions? TIA. Cheers, Thompson

Can someone be as kind to take measurements on a Porsche 959 drivers helmet? As much dimensioning as you can muster would be great, thanks.

You don't need the Jimmy kit, you can get all the parts needed seperatly. Banzai has the chassis parts. The rest, arms etc are Mchassis bits if you're going for hopups that's the cheaper way. There's a PDF with parts you can get for the MF01.

@waterbok — thank you for this suggestion! I've downloaded the MF01 manual and options PDF. I'll start to organize the parts list and post it up here for ref. I used to own a 58059 kit in 1987 (see showroom), but now have the itch for another. I've never owned an M Chassis, so will try to gather that list of parts from a PDF as well. Good tip on Banzai, thanks. After I post the list, please chime in on any corrections.

It would depend on how well equipped you are whether it would work out cheaper buying in bits or a kit. I bought my second in individual bits because I have lots and lots of screws and spare parts (bevel gears, TL01 parts etc). If you don't have all this to hand it would probably be beneficial to get a kit instead.

I do have some TL01, bevel gear spares and yes 30+ years of extra Tamiya screws do add up, but I don't think enough to build this out in parts.

Is there a definitive parts list for this project somewhere? Sounds interesting.

Lots and lots of photos please!

Essentially you'll need:

51576 A Parts

51577 B Parts

51391 C Parts

51425 F Parts

50738 G Parts

That's the easy / cheap parts. The more complex requirements include:

Propshaft (S/M/L)

Bearings 20x 1150, 2x 850 & 2x 850 flanged

Bevel gears 51008 x2

Drive shafts, cups, axles - I found it cheaper with aftermarket universals from 3Racing. Cups are expensive and harder to come by.

King Pins (M05 option parts work)

Suspension hinge pins, TL01 - 53301

Some 32mm & 18mm turnbuckles or threaded shaft

Suitable ball connectors

Gear shafts - this can be interesting, you need 2x 40mm, 1x 30mm and 1x 21mm. I ended up making my own

On top of all that you'll need -

50mm dampers

Wheels and tyres

Lots of screws and ball connectors

06 Module pinion

And electronics

Silly things might slow you down though, like the large washers inside the differentials, or the gear shafts not being available at the time. Or the tiny screws which hold the diffs together, things like that. It's a good idea to print out the back pages of the manual and use a highlighter or pen to mark everything off if you have it!

Would it not be easier to just buy the Suzuki kit then? :) or will it not be the correct dimensions/scale?

Oh I forgot you also will need 9mm long 5mm ballscrews for attaching dampers.

I used the standard tamiya bevel gears those with the ribbed shaft.

I can try to make a list of what went into this little one.

Only thing standard here are the gearbox/chassis bits 51576&51577 and driveshaft rest is all non-kit. Its not that hard to make your own driveshaft or modify one.

The chassis is waiting for universals to arrive and an solution for the front upper arms (those are very narrow)

For gearshafts I got the WR02 hollows those are cheap and 50mm (or use whats left over from the driveshaft ;) )

Oops, one thing none tamiya the front mount thats 3racing 3R-M05-23/LB

Noticed that 1 or 2 bits might be needed but not necessarily

- front bumper

- battery side thingies (3racing has some alloy bits for that)

- rear chassis mounts, most other tamiya will fit

@waterbok — Great photos and completed chassis from misc. parts. This really opens my eye, certainly gets one thinking "outside of the box" for future projects. Can't thank you enough for this spark.

Awesome, this thread has totally taken off, yes I plan to upload lots of photos of the build. You guys are welcome to add your builds in too.

In an effort to add to my future builds, parts stable and one shipment in the post, I'm going to purchase a full MF-01X Jimny kit. I'm sure someone here will need a spare Jimny body, decals set and rims.

Just to keep enthusiasm for this thread on track… my ex-58059 Porsche 959 roosting at the beach, 1987.

ps… anyone have any Porsche 959 driver head (+mirrors, top brake lights) they are willing to lend for a proper resin moulding? I'm also working on 3D printing of these too.

What a great photo! And where did you get those amazing wheels?

Waterbok - I made my own miniature front upper arms using a set screw and some cut-down ball adjusters. However, I'm now looking to replace them with some standard items, as the front suspension geometry is strange when compressed. I think the rigid front arms help to hold the suspension 'square' if that makes sense, whilst compressed.

I'm thinking of getting Tamiya 54529, but the price seems high for what you actually receive!

Thanks! Photo was shot by myself driving one-handed on my belly in the sand and holding my Minolta XG9 35mm manual focus…

Back in the day, I made the covers out of hand painted, hand cut lexan and glued these over the inaccurate yellow Tamiya rims. Today I would do the same on lexan, but illustrate a vector version from the real version rim. I will do this illustration and offer for free to us all.

Here are the other shots from that day. I wish I had taken more photos back then...

Joel Johnson even drove this exact Tamiya 959!

Cheers, Thompson

Instead of universals you could get dogbones and the hardened CR01 driveshafts, but thats almost same price as I haven't found a cheap address for those.
